Any hope that Chad Billingsley had of returning to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season ended Wednesday, as he was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. But the focus now shifts to whether or not the right-hander will be able to pitch again in 2013.

"There was an outside chance I would be able to get back, it wasn't very good, but I was able to hold onto that," Billingsley said. "The night they told me (I wouldn't pitch again this season), I thought, 'Crap.' We're in a September race with a chance to make the playoffs. You always want to be a part of it, but now I have to sit and watch."

Billingsley has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, though he doesn't know yet whether he will need surgery. He received a second injection of platelet-rich plasma on Wednesday as an alternative to surgery. The PRP procedure will take between four and five weeks to heal the UCL, but Billingsley won't really know the progress until he begins a throwing program in two weeks.

"They say it has a chance to heal, and the PRP injection should help it recover," Billingsley said. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed."

The worst scenario for Billingsley is that the ligament doesn't heal and he would need Tommy John surgery, knocking him out for all of 2013 as well. But given the timing of the injury, any surgery now also would have knocked him out for next season anyway. So Billingsley has the luxury to wait and see whether he can recover without surgery, with the chance of being ready for 2013.

"It gives you a chance to heal and not have to sit out more time," said Billingsley, who was 10-9 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 starts for the Dodgers in 2012.
