Fox Sports West:
The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded right-handed pitcher John Ely to the Houston Astros in exchange for minor league left-hander Rob Rasmussen.
Rasmussen, 23, is a native of Arcadia and played collegiately at UCLA after starring at Polytechnic High School in Pasadena. In 2007, the Dodgers selected him in the 27th round of the amateur draft, but he decided to attend UCLA instead.
Rasmussen was selected by the Miami Marlins in the second round of the 2010 amateur draft and then traded to the Houston organization on July 4 as part of the deal that sent Carlos Lee to Miami.
In three minor league seasons, Rasmussen is 20-21 with a 3.88 ERA in 60 games (53 starts), including 4-4 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) at Double-A Corpus Christi in 2012.
Ely, 26, was acquired in a Dec. trade in 2009 with the White Sox and went 4-13 with a 5.70 ERA in 25 games (19 starts) over three seasons in Los Angeles.
The Dodgers now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.

Not the trade some were expecting, but a trade nonetheless. The Dodgers sent John Ely, the perpetrator of "Elymania" a few years ago to Houston for left-handed pitcher Rob Rasmussen.
With the Dodgers signing Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, while also shopping starters Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang, Ely was about 15th on the starting pitcher depth chart. It's...
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody in Dodgertown that oft-troubled relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers is once again in the hot seat. This time it is for the Venezuela Bravos de Margarita.
Belisario, 29, has had several issues with the Dodgers in the four years he has spent in Los Angeles. In 2009 he had trouble getting a visa from the United States Embassy in Caracas...
The Los Angeles Dodgers traded John Ely to the Houston Astros for former Pasadena Poly High School and UCLA star Rob Rasmussen.
As a native of Arcadia, left-handed pitcher Rasmussen, 23, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 27th round of the 2007 amateur draft, but he chose to go to UCLA instead. In 2010, the Florida Marlins selected him in the 2nd round of the 2010 draft.

The Dodgers have sent a lot of guys to play in winter ball following the conclusion of the Arizona Fall League. They are well represented in the Caribbean Winter Leagues and it’s nice to see some guys getting consistent playing time.

Geison Aguasviva has a 7.71 ERA in 2 1/3 innings.
Juan Abreu has thrown 6 2/3 innings, allowed 6 hits, two runs, two...
The Astros have traded minor league left-hander Rob Rasmussen to the Los Angeles for right-hander John Ely.
The 26-year-old Ely spent most of last season with Triple-A Albuquerque, where he went 14-7 with a 3.20 ERA in 27 starts. He is 4-13 with a 5.70 ERA in 19 big league starts and six relief appearances with the Dodgers during the last three seasons.
Rasmussen was a combined...
Last week we heard from Dodgers GM Ned Colletti saying the Dodgers are probably done spending, more or less, according to Mark Saxon of ESPNLA. The Dodgers still have some holes to fill and if the above is true, there is a major trade storm brewing in Los Angeles.
The Dodgers have Dee Gordon on the trading block and the Mariners have been the biggest aggressor in the pursuit of...
There have been whispers the Dodgers have been shopping Andre Ethier basically the entire winter. Today, those whispers got even louder.
From Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News (surprisingly enough):
"Source: Dodgers shopping Andre Ethier. If they deal him, they could be in the mix for Nick Swisher."
Mike Petriello said he also heard the team is shopping...
The Los Angeles Dodgers appear capable of anything. Even a trade of right fielder Andre Ethier is not out of the question.
The Dodgers are shopping Ethier, major-league sources say -- and their intent might be to clear a spot for a free agent such as first baseman/outfielder Nick Swisher or center fielder Michael Bourn.
However, one official with knowledge of the Dodgers' thinking...
The Dodgers have a pretty thin bench. When guys like Skip Schumaker and Jerry Hairston are the best the team has to offer, something needs to be done.
For all the corner outfielder/first basemen the Dodgers had in recent years, that's where they're lacking right now. Despite acquiring Schumaker, the Dodgers might still need a legitimate center fielder. Tony Gwynn might...
The Dodgers have announced that they've traded RHP John Ely to the Astros for LHP Rob Rasmussen.
Earlier this week, a source told FOXSports.com that two American League teams had been in recent touch with the Los Angeles Dodgers about a trade for right fielder Andre Ethier.
One of those teams was the Seattle Mariners, but the talks failed to progress, major-league sources say. The other team is not known.
Ethier, 30, would be an excellent fit for the Mariners, who had...
I am at my desk holding the official BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot. It is my reward turned responsibility for covering Major League Baseball for over 20 years.
That’s close to 2,500 games, many spent watching Mike Piazza dominate his position like no other catcher with 396 homers (427 overall). That dwarfs Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Bill Dickey and Mickey Cochrane, all...
The New York Daily News’ Mark Feinsand just tweeted that the Dodgers might be looking to move Andre Ethier, with a possible view to getting involved in the Nick Swisher sweepstakes. That’s the same Andre Ethier they signed to a five-year $85 million extension in June.
The obvious caveat here is that this could well be part of the general winter chicanery that teams go through...
The Los Angeles Dodgers appear open to moving outfielder Andre Ethier, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports. He adds that if they are able to move Ethier, they could end up pursuing Nich Swisher.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Dodgers have zero interest in trading Ethier but will listen to offers for him. Teams that have not scored that power bat they were...
The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t done their offseason overhaul just yet apparently.
The Dodgers, who have been giving their franchise a very pricey facelift in the last four or five months, are still exploring options. According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Dodgers are now shopping outfielder Andre Ethier. Given Ethier’s huge contract and the Dodgers’ astronomical...
