Being hit by a pitch is part of the game, but it doesn't always result in an injury.  When being hit by a pitch does result in an injury, it can be devastating to a team and a player.  Just ask Curtis Granderson.  However, there is nothing more frightening than a pitch that rides up and in and hits a player in the head.  That's what happened to Elian Herrera of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yesterday as the Dodgers took on the Chicago White Sox, Herrera was hit in the helmet by a pitch.  It was a scary moment, but Herrera appeared to be fine. #Dodgers Elian Herrera hit in helmet by pitch while squaring to bunt in 7th inning.Stayed in game for rest of inning. Says he's okay. — Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) February 24, 2013 Herrera: "If I didn't move quickly I'd be dying rt now. It was coming right at my face " #Dodgers 2-2 in 9th v #WhiteSox — Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) February 24, 2013 Herrera is a 28-year old utility player fighting for any playing time he can get.  Herrera made his Major League debut last season and played in 67 games.  He hit .251/.340/.332.  Herrera has spent seven seasons in the minors prior to being called up in 2012. The Dodgers used Herrera primarily as an outfielder last season, but he can play the infield too.  He played third base, second base, and shortstop last year. Video of Dodgers' LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu's first spring training outing

Hyun-Jin Ryu made his Dodgers' debut on Sunday at Camelback Ranch. He threw one inning, allowed one hit and struck out Gordon Beckham on a changeup low and away -- Ryu's signature pitch. The hit he allowed was a triple to Dewayne Wise on a hanging curveball. Sandy Koufax worked with Ryu in a bullpen session a few days ago, but apparently Ryu hasn't yet mastered...

Maybe Alex Castellanos is the answer to the Dodgers' fourth OF question

If you've listened to any episodes of "Dugout Blues," you'll know Jared Massey might be the biggest Alex Castellanos fan on the planet. I try to keep him in check and to quell his excitement, mostly to no avail. Well, even I can't rain on Jared's parade now, especially since Castellanos might actually get a chance to be the Dodgers' right-handed...

Making Moves: Matt Wallach, Sean White, and the World Baseball Classic

Matt Wallach has replaced Eliezer Alfonzo in major-league camp for Spring Training. Alfonzo, one of the tens of Spring Training invitees operating on a minor-league deal, is suffering from dengue virus (yes, really). Eliezer will report to the minor-league portion of Camelback Ranch when he’s healthy enough to do so. Nobody knows when that will be, but he was a long-shot to make...

The Dodgers Sent Me A Pair of Free Tickets For 2013!

I checked my mailbox a couple of days ago and found a most welcome surprise, with a return address of Elysian Park Avenue. Inside of the unassuming plain white envelope resided vouchers for two free tickets to a Dodgers' game in 2013!I had filled out a survey at the end of 2012 with the possibility of two free tickets coming my way. I actually had completely forgotten about them...

Matt Kemp, Chad Billingsley, James Loney: A Triple Auto, i.e. One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other.

I was very, very surprised to win the below card from eBay for the price I did. I mean, I realize it is infested with the James Loney bug but still, Matt Kemp autos of any kind rarely can be had for any sort of steal nowadays. I've wanted one of these bad boys for a while and now I can say I am finally the proud owner of a dual auto of Kemp and Chad Billingsley.Numbered 50/50...

Zack Greinke simply wanted the most money

Zack Grienke wanted one thing during free agency, money. In fact Greinke did not care about where he landed as long as the dollar amount was the highest. “It’s obviously the No. 1 thing,” Greinke said. “I could play for the worst team if they paid the most … If the last place team offers $200 million and the first-place team offers $10, I’m going to go for the $200-million...

Dodgers get to know new lefty Ryu

Ryu Hyun-Jin has lost about 15 pounds since he reported to his first spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a fact that didn't go unnoticed by a reporter who used a common Korean phrase to say the left-hander's face was half its previous size., http://juicedsportsblog.com/sports-news/news/dodgers-get-to-know-new-lefty-ryu

Zack Greinke: ‘I could play for the worst team if they paid the most’

More often than not, professional athletes who sign lucrative contracts try to convince us that their decision was not strictly about money. That can be true in some situations, but money is usually the driving force. Dollars and cents were what motivated Zack Greinke to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the right-hander isn’t afraid to admit it. “It’s obviously the No...

Dodgers to broadcast in three languages in 2014

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be the first MLB team to broadcast games in three languages in 2014 when their new TV deal goes into effect reports the LA Times. In addition to the standard English and Spanish broadcast, the Dodgers will be adding in a Korean broadcast for their games. Korean may seem like an odd choice as a third language, but the Dodgers have had a tie to Korea...

Rangers rumors: Zack Greinke gave Texas chance to beat Dodgers’ offer

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke told Jon Heyman of CBS Sports that his decision on where to sign this offseason was all about the money. Greinke also led Heyman to believe he gave the Texas Rangers a chance to beat the Dodgers’ offer before he ultimately signed with LA. Greinke was refreshingly honest about the money he was seeking in free agency: ...

Mattingly, Dodgers discuss new contract

PHOENIX The Dodgers have talked to Manager Don Mattingly about a new contract, the team's chairman said Saturday. "We've talked to Don a lot about what he does and doesn't want right now," Mark Walter said. "I think you might see something come up before the end of the year." Walter didn't offer any details. Dodgers Zach Greinke: I Could Play For The Worst Team If They Paid The Most

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zach Greinke is one of the best in baseball at his position.  Greinke is also one of the games richest after signing a six-year, $147 million deal with the Dodgers this off-season. Greinke took a shot at those professional athletes who sign huge lucrative contracts, and then deny that it was about the money. Greinke let it be known to CBSSports.com that...

Baseball salary extremes: Dodgers and Astros

Baseball needs to figure out a way to split up the money they bring in from MLBAM and have each team spend a portion of that profit on player salaries. The words salary cap and baseball have been a striking issue in the past, but maybe those that control the game, that being the players and the owners, can work together, as a team between the owners and the union. In 2013 MLB...

Globe Trotters

Cuban defector Yasiel Puig and South Korean transplant Hyun-Jin Ryu have quickly become part of the Dodger fabric during their first big league camp.
