Dee Gordon of the Los Angeles Dodgers is quite fast, as his major league-leading 28 stolen bases would attest. But he might need to slow down a bit and grab a glass of water once in a while.

Gordon left Sunday night's game against the Mets after the eighth inning, suffering a cramp in his left leg. It was the second time in four games that Gordon came out of the game after eight innings with leg cramps. On Monday, Gordon arrived at his locker to find eight bottles of water, a friendly reminder that he needs to stay hydrated.

"He's been getting dehydrated, so it's a situation where we're going to have to make sure we keep him off the field a little bit," said manager Don Mattingly. "We knew we were pushing him pretty good, but it's not going to hurt him to get some days."

Gordon was out of the starting lineup on Monday, after starting 38 consecutive games, though Gordon entered the game in the eighth inning on a double switch and went 0-for-1. Gordon said he would drink his water, and that he wasn't hurt.

"It's just a day off, I promise," Gordon said.

Utility man Luis Cruz, just up from Class AAA, started at shortstop and went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly. But Mattingly insisted Monday was just a day off from starting for Gordon, who is hitting just .227 with a .277 on-base percentage this season.

"Luis didn't come here to take Dee's job," Mattingly said.
