In less than a year, new ownership has aggressively addressed the Dodgers' roster, scouting department and even 51-year-old Dodger Stadium (undergoing a $100 million offseason makeover). Unaddressed, though, is manager Don Mattingly's contract status. Mattingly is entering the final year of his three-year contract. There is an option for 2014, but Mattingly was told early in the offseason that the new owners were not prepared to exercise that option at this point. But Mattingly said the situation does not make him uncomfortable or concerned about his status with the Dodgers' new owners. "Not at all. I'm absolutely fine with it," Mattingly said. "The way I look at it is this: Somebody that comes in and spends $2 billion on a team and takes the payroll over $200 ...

Arsenal Analysis: Dodgers Best Pitches Of 2012 – Starters

As fans of the Dodgers, we’re always analyzing which pitchers have the best and worst pitches, but we normally base that on nothing but our own feelings at the moment, so I decided to take a more objective look at things. For a pitch to qualify for these rankings, I used a 200-pitch minimum for starters and a 50-pitch minimum for relievers. The metric used to measure pitch effectiveness...

Dodgers' Chad Billingsley Says Elbow Feels Fine; LA to Deal A Starter?

Tommy John surgery seems to have become a right of passage for big league pitchers.  Chad Billingsley, veteran Dodger right-hander, took another route when faced with a partially torn elbow ligament last August. The 28-year-old went on the disabled list, effectively ending his season with five weeks to go.  In October, he threw two simulated games in Arizona, and then shut...

Podcast: 'Dugout Blues' episode 21 - Dodgers, RSN, signings, prospects

On this episode of "Dugout Blues," Jared Massey (L.A. Dugout) and I discuss -- once again -- the television and regional sports network deal the Dodgers have agreed to with Time Warner Cable. The deal is reportedly for $7 billion over 25 years. Or, if you believe what I said in the podcast (twice), $25 billion for seven years. This seems like a repeat, but the Dodgers...

"The Dodgers and Los Angeles After 50 Years: The Economics of How a Sports Icon and a City Grew Together" -- A Recap From UCLA.

I attended a sports and economics event centered around the Dodgers and Los Angeles back in November. The event was held at my Alma mater of UCLA and included such speakers as Peter Guber, Ron Cey, Gary Beban, and Dodgers' Team Historian Mark Langill. Apparently UCLA is going to begin offering a Sports Business Program to its students. I may very well find myself back at UCLA...

More Contest Freebies To Say Gracias For: Trout, Piazza, Kate Upton....

Jeff from 2 by 3 Heroes gave away a bunch of cards to close out 2012, and did so in PWE fashion. Each participant and contest winner could select two cards. Jeff tried to bait me into one card, and as the below indicates, it easily worked.Your real 2012 AL MVP, Mike Trout.I also selected a Giants' card (yes yes, I know, traitorous). But hey, it's a solidly-booking rookie...
