For the last couple weeks, rumors have surfaced that the Dodgers are the favorites to land Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Today we heard the complete opposite, according to Ken Gurnick the Dodgers are not interested in Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Gurnick writes that the Dodgers already have nearly $200MM committed to Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Chad Billingsley and Josh Beckett already. Beckett is scheduled to make $15.75MM in 2014 and will be a free agent at the conclusion of next season. Chad Billingsley will make $12MM in 2014 and has a $14MM team option ($3MM buyout) for the 2015 season. With the Dodgers fully expected to hand $200MM or so to give Clayton Kershaw the extension he deserves, it makes sense they would be wise about how much money they allocate to their starting rotation, at least until they move on from Billingsley and Beckett. With former first-round picks Zach Lee and Chris Reed waiting in the minors to get their first crack at the bigs, it also makes sense they don’t want to block two of the brightest pitching prospects from getting to the minors. Ideally it would be nice to have them ready to take over in 2015 after Billingsley and Beckett depart as free agents. Recent reports suggest that the Los Angeles Dodgers had prepared to offer as much as a five-year, $50MM contract, but Gurnick refutes that thinking. If that is true it’s reported Gonzalez would be the newest member of the boys in blue.
