MLB Injury News:
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed catcher A.J. Ellis on the
15-day disabled list yesterday with a slight oblique injury. Ellis may not have
been transferred to the DL if the Dodgers didn’t need a roster spot to replace
injured pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
Los Angeles didn’t think Ryu – who was scratched from yesterday’s start due to a bruised foot – required a stint on the 15-day DL.
However, they needed to create a roster spot for someone to fill in for him
Ellis sustained a strained oblique on Wednesday, but he was
basically healed by yesterday. However, catcher is a position of depth with the
Dodgers, as they also have Ramon Hernandez and Tim Federowicz on the roster.
As a result, Ellis was placed on the DL to make room on the
roster for spot starter Matt Magill. Prior to hitting the DL, Ellis had hit
.262/.364/.369 with seven doubles, one triple and two home runs over 168 plate
