You'd think losing an MVP and triple-crown candidate like Matt Kemp would have a negative impact on a team's ability to score runs and win games. But for the Los Angeles Dodgers that has not yet been the case.
LA was off to a great start this year with Kemp leading the way, and now the Blue Crew is proving it can win without him. Last week, after placing Kemp on the DL because of a bad hamstring, the Dodgers split two-game series with Arizona and San Diego, then swept three games from defending World Series champion St. Louis over the weekend, scoring six runs in each game.
So since shelving Kemp LA is 5-2 and averaging 4.6 run per game.
It didn't hurt that Dodgers pitching allowed a total of 21 runs over those seven games.
Los Angeles has been a great moneymaker for its financial backers so far this season, ranking second on the money list at +$1,345, based on theoretical $100 wagers, second only to the surprising Baltimore Orioles. Last week the Dodgers made $320, winning three times as underdogs.
So heading into this week LA leads the NL West by seven games over second-place San Francisco.
The Dodgers are a bit banged up at the moment, though. Joining Kemp on the DL are OF Juan Rivera, IF Juan Uribe and 2B Mark Ellis. So LA is missing four guys who were in the starting lineup on opening day.
This week the Dodgers visit Arizona for three games starting Monday, then return home for three games with former division rival Houston beginning Friday. LA is 14-6 vs. the NL West this season and a ML-best 19-4 at home.
MLB odds makers have set their futures betting market by listing the Dodgers at -145 to win the NL West this season, +600 to win the National League pennant and +1,600 to win the World Series.
