The Outside Corner:
And our preview series moves along to the next team in the NL West, the San Diego Padres. The Padres started 2012 very slowly before turning on the jets in the second half behind Chase Headley, but the team still doesn't have much starting pitching, and will be without Headley for the first month of this year. Welp...

Padres fans will get an early taste of the Padres lineup minus Chase Headley. Scott Bair of the AP reported earlier today via twitter:
Chase Headley has fractured the tip of his thumb. He’s going to miss a month. Won’t require surgery
This is a huge setback for the Padres, who already lack offensive punch. Headley coming off his best season in the majors finished...
Bad news for the Padres and their fans, as their star third baseman will miss at least the first month of the season with a broken thumb.
Both Matt Garza and Chase Headley could start the 2013 season on the disabled list. In most seasons, this would simply be an unfortunate setback for their respective teams. In 2013, though, the injuries could affect more than individual stats and team performance. The injuries could affect trade value.
The Chicago Cubs have been active in their attempts to deal Matt Garza...
San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley will miss at least the first two weeks of the season after breaking the tip of his left thumb.
Headley was injured Sunday while sliding into second base trying to break up a double play. He went to San Diego, and an exam Monday revealed the fracture.
The injury is not likely to require surgery and will need about a month to heal.
The 2012 National League leader in RBI will miss the start to the 2013 season. Chase Headley of the San Diego Padres jammed him thumb on a play at second base. The initial injury looked minor, but it turns out Headley has a small fracture.
According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Headley's thumb fracture could cost him about a month.
Bad news on #Padres 3B Chase Headley...
The San Diego Padres will start the 2013 season without Chase Headley standing at third base. The Gold Glove winner fractured his thumb while sliding into second base in an attempt to break up a double play when the injury occurred. Results of an exam on Monday confirmed the injury and Headley will now miss at least a month but could also miss the entire month of April.
The San Diego Padres lost third basemen Chase Headley for the next four to six weeks when it was revealed he had broken the tip of his left thumb. Headley suffered the injury on a slide at second base as he attempted to break up a double play in a game against the Los Angeles Angels. Missing the most amount of time would put him out six weeks and cause him to miss the entire month...
That title is very confusing if you have a lisper reading it to you. Why you're having someone else read it to you, let alone a lisper doesn't make any sense. You can't find a better-qualified Task Rabbit? Put down your soy capp-a-latte and find a better intern; you owe it to yourself. Last year, Justin Upton had a problem with his thumb. He hit 8 homers the first...
Continuing from our season preview of the Padres earlier today...
Can the Padres keep their heads above water without Chase Headley and Yasmani Grandal to start the year?
Not having Headley and Grandal to start the year is huge for the Padres. Headley will likely end up missing most of April after breaking his thumb, while Grandal won't be back with the team until the...
No need to chase Headley

Third base is normally considered a shallow fantasy position, but that notion is being turned on its head. Not only is the position top-heavy, but there is ample depth available, which means you can actually wait on filling the 3B slot on your roster.
This may take some getting used to. Almost like coming to grips...
In the This Is My Nightmare series, we'll take a look at what the absolute worst case scenario for each team would be in 2013. Think of it as the negative complement to our You May Say I'm A Dreamer series that we'll be running during our preview series.
The Padres might actually be screwed over early on in the 2013 season. With Chase Headley likely missing two to...
The San Diego Padres thought they were finally building an offense last season, when they ranked fifth in the National League in runs after the All-Star break.
But two weeks before Opening Day, the middle of their batting order has all but fallen apart:
* The No. 3 hitter, third baseman Chase Headley, learned Monday that he will miss the first month of the season with a small fracture...
The 2013 Padres are pretty definitively Chase Headley's team. He's the star, the face of the franchise, and the best player on the team. I'd say that Yasmani Grandal and Cameron Maybin are the next most important members of the squad. But there's a player on this Padres team that really isn't getting much attention, and I think he can have a huge impact on the...
There was no Daily Friar yesterday as I was making my way back to San Diego from Peoria. I had a great time taking in Saturday’s game and seeing some people all excited for the new season to start. Sunday the Padres played the Angels and Diamondbacks in split squad action, which both teams wound up losing. Yesterday they came back together and took on the Cubs, which also resulted...
