Toto, I have a feeling were not in San Francisco anymore. Err…Dusty, that is. The Cincinnati Reds just fired Dusty Baker just a few days after the Reds were knocked out of the playoffs in the Wild Card game, and it has the potential to get a lot uglier before it gets any prettier. Despite the general absurdity of firing Baker (more on that in a minute), Dusty’s parting words were a heartbreaking recount of his time in Cincinnati.
“This last couple weeks I’ve been getting a rash of hate mail, racial mail. Maybe it is time to go . . . This is really ugly. There are all sorts of references to Barack Obama. So now I know where they are coming from. I don’t know, maybe people are mad at him, so they don’t like the idea of blacks in authority.”
I guess Dusty learned the hard way the difference between San Francisco and Cincinnati. The fact that Baker was subject to racist hate from own fans is despicable at best.
