“Why did the Mets re-sign Scott Hairston? Would it not have been better to let Fernando Martinez take the backup role and save the million dollars? I don’t understand this move.”
Martinez has been playing professional baseball for six years and has never played more than 90 games in a season because he just can’t stay healthy. To make matters worse, he has arthritis in his knees and if you watched him last Spring Training you know how much it is hurting him. He says he is healthy and ready to re-start his career with the Astros, who claimed him off waivers from the Mets yesterday. I hope he can turn it around for himself. But, I was unable to find one scout or team insider yesterday who felt confident he had a future in the big-leagues at this point. Though, time will tell… The point is, I think there was zero chance Martinez could be counted on in 2012 to be a back-up outfielder for the big-league Mets.
All that said, why cut any...
