Former New York Yankees outfielder Shane Spencer was the victim of a radio hoax on Tuesday in which a caller, who claimed to be Spencer, called into Albany radio station 104.5 "The Team" and made startling allegations involving the Yankees teams Spencer played on.Spencer played for the Yankees for five seasons from 1998 to 2002.During the call, which took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. and lasted for nearly a half-hour, the man identifying himself as Spencer spun tales of drug use in baseball, and on the Yankees, while also alleged that he took steroids while playing for baseball's most storied franchise, too.The audio has since been taken down from the station's website after it was discovered to be a hoax. The station said they are currently investigating the incident.Spencer, who now serves as the hitting coach for the Somerset Patriots of the independent Atlantic League, was alerted by the Yankees once news of the interview reached the clubhouse.“I listened to (the interview) for about a minute and I about threw up,” Spencer told ESPN.com. “I just want it out there that it wasn’t me.”“In response to an interview that ESPN Radio 104.5 FM host Mike Lindsley claims to have done with me on Tuesday afternoon, I would like to set the record straight that I did not participate in any such interview, “Spencer said in a statement.Spencer also said he has never used any performance-enhancing drugs.“It’s embarrassing,” the real Spencer said. “It’s almost like I want to drive to Yankee Stadium and apologize.”Spencer batted .263 with 43 home runs and 167 RBI in his time as a Yankee.“I try to be a positive role model,” he said. “I never touched the stuff.”Via SI
