With their first-round pick in the draft Monday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers bucked a trend. They selected high school shortstop Corey Seager 18th overall.

That ended a streak of nine consecutive years that the Dodgers took a pitcher with their first draft pick. Before Seager, the last position player the Dodgers took with their first selection was first baseman James Loney, whom they drafted in the first round in 2002. Loney was out of the starting lineup for the third time in five games Monday when the Dodgers earned a 4-3 win at Philadelphia.

Seager, 18, played shortstop at Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, N.C., but with his 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame, many believe he will eventually move to third base.

"We're excited to have taken a quality young man," said Logan White, the Dodgers' assistant general manager in charge of scouting. "He's athletic, can hit and comes from a great family with the bloodlines we look for."

Seager, the brother of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager, hit .519 in his senior season with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 28 games. The younger Seager has committed to play for reigning NCAA baseball champion South Carolina.

In the supplemental first round, the Dodgers drafted shortstop Jesmuel Valentin, son of former big-leaguer Jose Valentin, out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy with the No. 51 overall pick.
