Found June 18, 2013 on Baseball Hot Corner:
PLAYERS: Kyle Blanks
TEAMS: San Diego Padres
The hottest hitter on the hottest team in the National League was headed to the minors earlier this month.  The San Diego Padres had optioned Kyle Blanks to Triple-A Tuscon on June 5 to make room for Cameron Maybin’s return from the disabled list, but called him right back when Yonder Alonso hit the DL.  Beset by injuries himself over the past three seasons, Blanks has made the most of the opportunity, hitting .316/.369/.633 so far in June with five home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast against the division-leading Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Drafted as an 18-year-old in 2004, the imposing 6’6” Blanks soared through the minor leagues as a top 1B/OF prospect who could hit for power and average.  First arriving in San Diego in 2009, he hit .250/.355/.514 with 10 home runs in 148 at bats before a bout of plantar fasciitis ended his season in late August.  Thus began a frustrating pattern of injury that stalled his progress. Batting cleanup for the Padres at the start ...

The Bar: Everth Cabrera’s Hamstring

This is where we gather from time to time to talk about something big in the Padres world or just the Padres or just baseball. It’s a roundtable discussion. Except, you know, no round tables. This is a Public House . . . so we’re at the bar. Everth Cabrera has been fantastic this year but with his hamstring strained how do the Padres fill the void moving forward? Can they play...

Royals and Padres need to Deal

by John Viril— The Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres are mirror images of each other. Kansas City stands 34-34 while the Padres are a half-game better at 35-34. Yet, they have achieved their success by completely different means. The Royals have just pulled back to .500 by preventing enough runs to keep an anemic offense afloat. Meanwhile, the Padres position players have...

Cabrera, the NL leader with 31 stolen bases was hurt during San Diego's 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. Outfielder Jaff Decker was recalled from Triple-A Tucson to take Cabrera's place on the 25-man roster. The left-handed Decker is making...

Everth Cabrera Propelling San Diego Padres Up NL West

Lenny Ignelzi- AP Everth Cabrera has been the most valuable player in all of baseball during the last 30 days. Thanks to Cabrera’s strong performance through his last 27 games, the San Diego Padres are in the midst of a seven-game win streak and are quickly climbing up the NL West ladder. During his previous four stints in the majors, Cabrera has been an average hitter (if not...

Who are these San Diego Padres?

The San Diego Padres? Most of us predicted them to finish last in the NL West this year, right? That division was expected to be a two-team race between the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants and megabucks Los Angeles Dodgers. Early in the season, however, the surprise emergence of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies made the NL West a three-team battle...

Padres’ Will Venable makes game-saving diving catch

San Diego Padres center fielder Will Veneble saved the game Monday against the San Francisco Giants. In a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Veneble had this diving catch off the bat of Juan Pierre. Had Veneble not made the grab, Brandon Belt, who was standing at second base, would have easily scored the game-winning run. After winning this game in the 13 innings,...

TV Ratings: Padres Set Another Record on New RSN (Also: K.C. Royals, Confederations Cup)

The San Diego Padres set a new ratings record Tuesday — albeit with a small sample size. In other news, the Royals continue to scorch the ratings in Kansas City, and UniMás hit an eight-year [...]

While You Were Drinking: Game 71 (SD vs. SF)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. Last night the Padres 7 game win streak came to an end as the Giants took game 2 of the series 5-4. They meet today at 12:45 for the rubber game: Eric Stults for San Diego and Madison Bumgarner for San Francisco. Recaps: Power rally not...

Benches clear in Padres-Giants game

Both benches cleared after Giants starter Madison Bumgarner threw a pitch behind Padres' first baseman Jesus Guzman in the second inning of their game Wednesday. Bumgarner's first pitch to Guzman sailed about belt-high, apparently in response to Guzman's excessive celebration after hitting a pinch-hit home run Tuesday night. Guzman jumped out of the way and then took...

The Rare All-Star

Some teams dominate the All-Star roster, and some teams get a lone rep.  Some teams always send position players and perhaps a pitcher every now and then, some teams just send one or the other.  In recent years, San Diego has been in the latter category of both. The last two seasons, the Padres have only sent one representative, a pitcher.  Since moving to Petco, the Padres have...

Indoctrination 101: Naming Rights

There are certain areas of life where beliefs must be arrived upon using one’s own freewill. Padres baseball is not one of those areas. During the middle of last week I was notified by my wife and daughters that we would be buying two fish this summer as pets. I smiled with faux enthusiasm. The last fish we brought into our home came from a creek in Poway. We thought it was a tadpole...

Padres-Giants Preview

Edinson Volquez bounced back from the worst start of his career with one of his best outings of the season to keep the San Diego Padres' win streak intact his last time out. The right-hander will now try to help the Padres extend their season-best run to seven games and end their recent road woes against the San Francisco Giants in Monday night's opener. Before his latest...
