Memories Of Kevin Malone:
Dylan Hernandez brings us the news that Jay Gibbons is coming home from Winter Ball because he has blurred vision.Jay Gibbons, who was playing winter ball in Venezuela, returned to Los Angeles on Tuesday night to get his eyes examined, according to Dodgers sources.Never seems to be serious until it is, and it's certainly not good news for a guy who is probably the starter in left field right now.
Among the candidates to be the Dodgers’ starting left fielder, Gibbons was 2 for 14 in four games for the Tiburones de La Guaira and complained of blurred vision. The 33-year-old underwent corrective eye surgery earlier this off-season.
Dodgers management believes the issue isn’t serious.
Dave Hansen will be the hitting coach and he gives some insight into why he might be a good one.
Four of the top six all-time pinch-hitters are former Dodgers players and current Dodgers employees.
Lenny Harris, No. 1 on the list, is a Double-A hitting coach; Mark Sweeney, No. 2, is a special assistant for baseball operations; Manny Mota, No. 3, is a coaching fixture on the Major League staff.
And just welcomed back to the organization is Dave Hansen, No. 6 on the pinch-hit list and a key element in the transition to a younger Major League coaching staff.
Here's his theory on why pinch-hitters make good hitting coaches.I gotta say I like this coaching staff, for whatever that's worth.
"For myself, the big reason is that I struggled a lot as a player and failed a lot," he said. "You learn to persevere if you've stayed around like I did. As a pinch-hitter, you learn to fight tooth and nail every at-bat. You're a team-oriented guy. That's not your at-bat in the ninth inning with the game on the line, it's a team at-bat. It's hard to get personal stats with one-at-bat a game, so you've got to have a team concept.
"You learn to control your emotions, too. You feel the juices flowing. I miss the adrenaline, where your legs are shaking when you're in the batter's box and the crowd is going nuts and you wonder what's going on, but you focus and get the job done."
