New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is not running yet but has been fielding ground balls and taking batting practice as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken left ankle. He also addressed the latest PED allegations related to teammate Alex Rodriguez ... sort of. Jeter said Monday he is on schedule to be ready by Opening Day. "Everything's been good, everything's right where it needs to be," Jeter said in the New York Daily News. "The goal is April 1, that's when we start our season. I'm progressing, right where I need to be." Jeter hit in the batting cage at the Yankees' minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla., Monday morning and fielded 55 grounders. He will not start running, however, until position players report to spring training on Feb. 17. When asked by reporters about Rodriguez, Jeter declined to comment. "Let him speak first," Jeter said. "Everybody knows that. I don't comment on anyone until they speak first, so let him address his situation before I comment on it." Jeter does not expect to play in the Yankees spring opener Feb. 23 against the Atlanta Braves in Orlando. "I guess I'd have to sit down with our trainers and doctors to see what their plan is in terms of when I start playing games," he said. "You've got to progress and I've been progressing just fine. "Once everything is where it's supposed to be, you just get in baseball shape, which really doesn't take that long, I don't think."
