The Philadelphia Phillies may have only finished third in the NL East with an 81-81 record last season, but that’s not stopping Jimmy Rollins from saying that the division still belongs to his club. Rollins, who is no stranger to expressing confidence in his club, doesn’t care that the Washington Nationals were the class of the division last season. “It still runs through Philly,” Rollins said at a benefit earlier this week, via The 700 Level. “[Washington] had one year to win it. It was just like when the Mets took it from Atlanta, it was still up for grabs. I’m sure Atlanta felt it was still theirs, but fortunately we were able to come in and take it the next five years.” Rollins offered some fair reasoning. He says that the team was “on the mend,” and points out that guys like Roy Halladay will be back. For some reason, he also thinks Cliff Lee performed poorly last season. Someone should tell him that just because Lee couldn’t get a win until July (he finished 6-9) doesn’t mean ...

Phillies Player Review: Laynce Nix

Before the 2012 season, Ruben Amaro, Jr. signed Laynce Nix to fill the team’s need for a left-handed bat off the bench in the same vein as Ross Gload and Greg Dobbs before him. The deal was relatively cheap and also provided the roster with a player who had a superfluous “y” in their name, something the team was lacking after Jayson Werth skipped town in 2010 and left the Phillies...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Dollars and sense equals change

The free-agent plans addressed by the Philadelphia Phillies may help Jonathan Papelbon first.  That stated, some options have picked up by the involved organizations and others have been declined, including two from former Phils.  Who has been become unavailable and who can now be had? TAL’S HANDY CAPS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: My articles are designed to represent a baseball-man’s...

Why I Love the Phillies – Vanessa

I love the Phillies because they are so down to earth and just very warm-hearted guys and I think Charlie Manuel is a great coach. I dont really hear anything negative about the players and when I went to the Ryan Howard Celebrities Servers event, all the players that were there treated me and my family so nice. Ryan Howard even let my son say a few words at his event, which I thought...

Phillies Offseason Plan: Corey’s Version

My offseason plan looks different than Pat’s and Eric’s. They each outlined under-the-radar solutions to the Phillies’ problems, moves that could make the team younger and not put the Phils over the luxury tax. Despite his deficiencies, B.J. Upton is worth a five-year deal for the Phillies. I took a different approach. The Phillies need to improve, and I’m more concerned...

Phillies Player Review: Tyler Cloyd

Cloyd had a run for the ages in 2012 that saw him crack the super-competitive Phillies rotation. Photo: AP Heading into 2012, the Phillies seemed to be full of starting pitching options. Doc Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Vance Worley, Kyle Kendrick, and Joe Blanton were all but guaranteed to be on the Phils’ Opening Day roster barring injury while Joel Pineiro, Dave ...

Top Moment #5: Kratz, Mayberry Come Up Big in Atlanta

Erik Kratz takes a hit from Chipper Jones (Photo: AP) As John Mayberry Jr. raced toward the infield, a blooper dropped into shallow center field.  He immediately fired the baseball home while Chipper Jones rounded third.  The throw was a little up the line, but Erik  Kratz was able to make one of the top defensive plays of the year.  As soon as the ball hit the glove, Jones collided...

Superstitions in the Minors: Prominent and Prolific

Phils hurler Tyler Cloyd is one of many players that rely on superstitions Baseball players are known for being some of the quirkiest of all athletes and, as such, they typically seem to be the most superstitious. Many people feel that superstitions and sports go hand in hand. The habits and things players believe can bring good luck or serve up bad luck are embedded deeply in the...

Cliff Lee Traded To Dodgers, It Could Happen

By SBRForum.com The trade of Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee to the Los Angeles Dodgers could mean some big things for the Dodgers going into the 2013 season. He is one of the best pitchers in the game behind the plate and can add some needed fire power to a team that is in dire need of some revamps. While Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr states he has no intention...

A Realistic Way the Phillies Could Acquire Giancarlo Stanton

Your browser does not support iframes.  Giancarlo Stanton is pissed off.  And why wouldn't he?  A rising star that was part of the new Miami Marlins, he finds himself surrounded by a bunch of rookies.   This is a demoralizing blow to the budding superstar.  But, by making the major league minimum on a frugal Marlins team, Stanton is not slated to go anywhere.  But - maybe...

Phillies Offseason Plan: Ian’s Version

Morrison is wild, talented, and is my pick to bring to Philly. Photo: AP This week, you have seen Eric, Pat, and Corey unveil their offseason plans for the Phillies, which have included Nick Swisher, Peter Bourjos, Denard Span, and others. I’m a little bit of a Wild Card compared to the rest of the gang – somewhere in between “Vice President Biden with a live microphone”...

Reading Phillies Renamed Fightin Phils

After being known as the Reading Phillies for over 40 years, the Philadelphia Phillies Double-A affiliate club announced today that they would be changing their name on November 4th.  The new team name? The Reading Phillies will now go as the Reading "Fightin Phils". And yes, their new mascot is an ostrich.  Along with the new name, the club will undergo a transformation...
