Earlier today, the Anaheim Angels signed free-agent Josh Hamilton to a five-year deal, believed to be the result of the Los Angeles Dodgers aggressive moves as of late. Since new ownership has saved the Dodgers from bankruptcy, they have brought in Hanley Ramirez to play shortstop, Adrian Gonzalez to play first base, Carl Crawford to eventually play left field and Josh Beckett, Zack Greinke and Ryu Hyun-jin to solidify their starting rotation.  They have also brought in pieces to play key bench roles in Nick Punto and Skip Shumaker. It only makes sense that they would also be in talks with top free-agent batter Josh Hamilton. Only, it wasn’t the Dodgers who approached Hamilton. With their outfield set and under long-term contracts and no designated hitter in the National League, they had no place to put Hamilton, unless they were to trade someone. And while Andre Ethier has been rumored to be on the block before, there is no real possibility of that happening. Out of respect, the Dodgers did listen to Michael Moye and Scott Sanderson, Hamilton’s agents and sat down with them on the final day of the winter meetings earlier this month. While the Dodgers did do a cursory background check on Hamilton and did take his agent’s calls as recently as the beginning of this week, they were never seriously considering the option of bringing Hamilton and his baggage into the fold. He could be somebody else’s problem. That somebody else turned out to be the Angels and they are welcome to the Dodgers’ hand-me-downs. While Hamilton does provide a power bat, his erratic ups and downs combined with his well known drug and alcohol addictions with relapses as recent as ten months ago, the Dodgers rightly said thanks, but no thanks. Anaheim can take our sloppy seconds.
