34 year old outfielder Juan Pierre’s contract was picked up by the Phillies today, guaranteeing him a spot on the opening day roster.

The Phillies had to make a decision on Pierre by tomorrow, as Pierre was able to ask for his release if he was not put on the roster.

Juan Pierre gives the Phillies some versatility and some speed off of the bench. Left field could be of particular interest for the Phillies as both John Mayberry Jr. and Laynce Nix have struggled this spring.

Pierre has been engaged in strong competition with Scott Podsednik, who some have said has had a better camp than Pierre. However, Podsednik still has options on his contract. It is possible that Podsednik will start at Triple A this season, with a call up to the majors possible. It’s also still possible Podsednik makes the team out of camp. It all hinges on how many pitchers the Phillies choose to take north with them.

Juan Pierre batted .279 in 711 plate appearances with the Chicago White Sox last year. He is a lifetime .296 hitter, and is a master small ball player and hunter.

The Phillies will now be on the hook for Pierre’s $800,000 contract.
