Juan Rivera will be back but can he continue to be what the Dodgers need? He will make $4 mil with a option for 2013.
After being acquired from the Blue Jays for pretty much nothing, Rivera helped the Dodgers to a winning record in the second half, allowing the Dodgers to push Matt Kemp into the 3rd spot in the lineup, which is his more natural position and have someone behind him to provide protection in case they tried to pitch around him. As a result Matt Kemp had better numbers in the second half than he did in the first even though everybody else regressed.
Rivera is a godsend, he can play 1B, LF and RF, smashes left handed pitchers and plays hard all the time. I was a favorite of his when he was an Angel and believed he would be great as a Dodger and it was nice to see I was correct.
With this signing the Dodgers shore up their outfield, and now need to find someone to play third base, decide what they’ll do with Uribe and James Loney and figure out if Fedo can be the everyday...

2011 Los Angeles Dodgers off-season preview: Trade targets
In the last of my off-season previews, I look at potential trade targets. The Dodgers' minor-league system is rich with low-level pitching and MLB-average (at best) outfielders. Teams will be interested in pitching, but the Dodgers could (and should) go a different direction -- trading veterans. Will they? Probably not. But there are some pieces on the market the team could certainly...
2011 Los Angeles Dodgers off-season preview: Free agent pitchers
The Dodgers, believe it or not, could be in the market for a starting pitcher this off-season. It depends on two things: whether Hiroki Kuroda re-signs and if they don't want to rely on Nathan Eovaldi to be the team's fifth starter. With Rubby De La Rosa likely out for the majority of the season, a veteran could be brought in to keep Eovaldi's innings down -- if...
Transaction Analysis: The First Free Agent Signings of the Fall by Ben Lindbergh
Signed free agent LF-R Juan Rivera. [11/3]
What baffles me about this move isn’t that the Dodgers re-signed Juan Rivera, but that the Dodgers re-signed Juan Rivera for $4.5 million (technically $4 million with a $500,000 buyout of his 2013 team option, which brings the total to $4.5 million in guaranteed cash). Granted, the Dodgers found out last season what can happen when...
Dodgers - Re-signed Juan Rivera
Los Angeles Dodgers - Signed OF Juan Rivera to a 1-year, $4.5 million contract with club option for 1-year, $3.5 million.
This is a signing that makes me want to take a paint tutorial (Billy is pretty loyal to the Royals though and might not be available). Words will have to be enough.
Honestly though this isn’t an objectively terrible signing. I can’t readily identify...
Colletti Not Sure What Hand He's Been Dealt
After Frank McCourt agreed to sell the Dodgers, even general manager Ned Colletti didn't know how that would impact his ability to construct the team's 2012 roster. This is unchartered territory: a team getting sold in the offseason, with the previous owner cash-strapped, no favorite to be the new owner, and differing opinions on whether adding payroll increases or decreases...
Roy Halladay or Clayton Kershaw: Who Really Deserves the NL Cy Young Award?
The 2011 NL Cy Young award race is all but narrowed down to just two pitchers – Roy Halladay and Clayton Kershaw, two very deserving pitchers who each put together phenomenal seasons.
Halladay is the reigning champ, a veteran who has won the award twice, while Kershaw is an up-and-coming superstar looking to establish himself as one of baseball’s premier pitchers. (It should...

Dodgers sign Juan Rivera
LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced that they have signed outfielder Juan Rivera to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti.
Juan proved to be a valuable addition to our lineup last season both in terms of his versatility and run production, said Colletti. He is capable of playing three positions and his production against...
Better Than Expected
... Or not enough respect!?
I have taken all the Vegas odds along with empirical 2011 results to tally up which MLB starting pitchers helped their team garner better than expected results. The methodology was to take the win percentage of the games each starting pitcher pitched in, then comparing that to the expected win percentage of those same games based on the win expectancy...
