Every finger is crossed, every prayer has been said, and now we must wait for the results of Kemp's MRI. Last night the whole world stopped for a moment as they saw Kemp leave after scoring a run in the first inning of yesterday's loss to the Brewers. This is not good, not good at all.
It's been made official Matt Kemp has been placed on the disabled list for a second time this season. The official report is saying a strained left hamstring again, so no word on if the MRI is back yet or not. Meanwhile, in a corresponding move the Dodgers have called up Alex Castellanos to hopefully provide another youthful spark to this 2012 Dodger roster.
Castellanos, 25, was acquired from the Cardinals in the deal last summer that sent shortstop Rafael Furcal on a one way flight to St. Louis. Castellanos can handle duties at second base, third base, and all three outfield spots.
Castellanos was batting .379/.476/.759 for the Isotopes, hitting 10 doubles, four triples, five home runs, and driving in 14 RBIs in 22 games. He also stole nine bases in 11 attempts. Speculation is already arising that Castellanos could be dealt during the next sixty days, meaning, the Dodgers may simply be showcasing his talents in hope of using him as trade bait. We all now the Dodgers' hot stove should start warming up immediately following the Kemp announcement.
The Dodgers have found a lot of success in this young season already, mainly from it's unlikely contributors, like youngsters Elian Herrera, Ivan De Jesus, Nathan Eovaldi and Scott Van Slyke. The Dodgers have also been surprised by the play of Jerry Hairston and Tony Gwynn Jr, who will likely have much bigger roles should Kemp spend the expected next month or so on the shelf. Perhaps the even bigger surprise has been Bobby Abreu, who has stepped up big time both on and off the field for the Dodgers since the Dodgers signed him after his release by the Angels.
Castellanos will have to start slugging right away if he hopes to stay on the 25-man roster. The Dodgers are hoping to get Juan Uribe and Juan Rivera back from the disabled list within the next week or two, so time will not be on Castellanos' side from the get-go. If he can get things going early I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Dodgers give him an extended look. In the meantime I would like to wish Matt Kemp a speedy, but not too speedy recovery. Take your time Bison, we need you, but rushing back is never the right approach, especially with the ol' hammy.
