Philadelphia Phillies Manger Charlie Manuel Charlie Manuel should he be in the Phillies plans for 2013? Previously I have written on this subject, stating that with all the youth possibly coming in 2013 that Manuel might not be the right manager. Since that time we have seen the Phillies on a small run, winning a few series’ with some youth in the lineup. Now I realize that this should not change much of our thinking but, we should acknowledge the good as well. Last night Kyle Kendrick looked like a number one pitcher, this after two brutal performances as Joe Blanton’s replacement. Kendrick pitched seven shutout innings while walking NONE. What was the origin of the sudden Cy Young performance? Charlie Manuel, who privately met with Kendrick after his last horrible start. Manuel basically told Kendrick, pitch like you pitched in the bullpen, attack the hitters. The results of the conversation/pep-talk are obvious, a seven inning shutout. While all of us look to place some of the bl...

Take a ride on the Kyle Kendrick roller coaster

If Kyle Kendrick's baseball career was a movie, it would be the second remake of Total Recall where up is down and down is up. The Kyle Kendrick story begins with a young, seemingly talentless pitcher who bursts onto the scene with stones of steel and without whom the Phillies do not win their first division title in fourteen years.  After a 10-4 record and...

Phillies' Manuel takes Rollins to woodshed over lack of hustle

For 13 seasons, Jimmy Rollins has been a dynamic, game-changing, sure-handed shortstop and hitter atop the Philadelphia Phillies' lineup. But in the same 13 seasons, Rollins has countered his flashes of brilliance with lapses on the base paths, most notably not running out ground balls. Rollins didn't run out a ground ball out in the sixth inning of Wednesday afternoon...

Phillies Unravel Late, Miss Out on Sweep of Marlins

Roy was good. But not quite good enough. (AP) Roy Halladay gave ‘em a chance, but the Phillies offense couldn’t get it together once again. The Phillies had an opportunity to sweep the reeling Marlins, but instead were blown out, losing 9-2. THE PEN IS BULL -It’s like playing Russian Roulette. Charlie Manuel has no choice but to call on someone; sometimes it works, sometimes...

Kyle Kendrick and the bullpen combine for a five-hit shut out as the Phils beat the fish, 1-0.

A combine five-hit shutout by Kyle Kendrick and the bullpen allow the Phils to take the series from the fish as they defeat the Marlins, 1-0. The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the first as Jimmy Rollins hits the second pitch of the game into the right field seats, his fourteenth home run of the season. That would be more than enough as Kyle Kendrick would throw seven shutout innings,...

Record-Setting Night Highlighted by Solid Pitching

There was an awful lot going on in last night’s 1-0 Phillies win over the Marlins. And it all began with just the second pitch of the game which Jimmy Rollins sent screaming over the right field wall for the 41st lead-off homer of his career. That turned out to be the only run of the game, which was also a record-setting game for Rollins. He picked up his 1,731st game at shortstop...

Marlins ace Johnson outdueled by Kendrick

MIAMI (AP) -- Kyle Kendrick pitched five-hit ball for seven innings and Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a home run off Josh Johnson on Tuesday night, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. Charlie Manuel earned his 700th win as a manager with the Phillies' second straight shutout. Cole Hamels opened the series between NL East rivals with...

Kyle Kendrick Outduels Josh Johnson in 1-0 Shutout

A pitcher's duel between Josh Johnson and Kyle Kendrick, that's not something you see everyday.  Jimmy Rollins did a few awesome things tonight. For one thing, he launched his 41st career leadoff home run. This happened in the first inning, giving his team the early lead. The next feat he accomplished occurred when the game became official: Jimmy Rollins passed Larry...

Rollins' leadoff homer stands up as Phils blank Marlins again

MIAMI -- Kyle Kendrick wasn't attempting to be Cole Hamels, but he sure looked liked him Tuesday. Kendrick threw seven scoreless innings for the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins. The Phillies also blanked the Marlins 4-0 on Monday, with Hamels throwing a complete game. "I'm not going to try to be Cole, I'm not Cole," Kendrick said...

Josh Johnson set to battle Phillies

After snapping a lengthy skid to an NL East rival, the Philadelphia Phillies have a chance for their longest win streak in nearly three weeks. The Phillies, though, might need a better performance from Kyle Kendrick if they want to earn their third straight win Tuesday night against a slumping Miami Marlins lineup. Philadelphia (53-62) ended a five-game losing streak to Miami with...

Kyle Kendrick, Josh Johnson Square Off In Game Two

What a way to start off this series with the division-rival Marlins. Cole Hamels was spectacular for the second straight start last night as he tossed his second consecutive complete game shut out. Opposed from his five-hitter against the Braves last week, Hamels allowed just seven hits to the Marlins, who coincidentally, were shutout the game before by Chris Capuano and the Dodgers...

Phillies Prevail in Pitching Duel Thanks to J-Roll's Leadoff Home Run

Final: Phillies 1, Marlins 0. WP: Kyle Kendrick (5-9, 4.53 ERA) LP: Josh Johnson (7-9, 3.73 ERA) SV: Jonathan Papelbon (26) Nothing really much happened in tonight's game except for stellar pitching, and a little power from Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins during the first few moments of tonight's action.   That's right, J-Roll provided the only offensive scoring for...
