There has been a lot of talk lately about the logjam in the outfield that will occur when Bay returns from his fractured rib. Ideas ranging from sending Ike down to creating a four man rotation in the outfield have been tossed around. Some ideas include Kirk platooning with either Torres or Bay, which should be completely out of the question. Kirk Nieuwenhuis has been one of the most consistent and productive players on this Mets and should not take a backseat to failed acquisitions at a desperate hope of them regaining some sort of production out of them. Specifically this applies to both Jason Bay and Andres Torres. Both have come up as possible reasons why Kirk may lose playing time, and that is unacceptable. Nieuwenhuis has all five tools, can be batted anywhere in the lineup and quietly does this with success while Torres and Bay have failed to produce over their respective tenures with the Mets. After starting off at a dreadful 3-19 skid in 2012, Jason Bay turned it on batting...

Mets Will Not Demote Ike Davis Despite .159 Batting Average

As Chumbawamba once sang, "Ike gets knocked down, will he get up again?" Terry Collins has told reporters that Ike Davis will not be demoted to the minors. Instead, Davis will lose significant playing time, but will be permitted to work out his problems at the Major League level. Collins said that he will start Davis based on favorable matchups. Davis is batting .159...

Dickey Wants An Extension, But Shouldn’t Wright Get One First?

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, R.A. Dickey would like the front office to pick up his $5 million dollar option for 2013 and begin negotiating a contract extension, saying: “I like it here and I want to be here. I feel like the team is moving in the right direction, and I want to be a part of the solution. Now it’s up to them. If I’m in their plans, [a contract...

Cracks Appearing In 2012 Mets’ Feel-Good Story

Regression to the mean can be a cruel thing. Maybe that’s why it’s called “mean.” The Mets seem to be running full-speed, headlong in that direction. Since busting out 4-0 against Atlanta and Washington, Terry Collins’s crew has gone a definition-of-mediocre 18-20. Much as I hate to say it, perhaps the preseason prognosticators were right: weak starting pitching...

My experience on SNY’s “Beer Money”

Do you fancy yourself a Mets trivia connoisseur? Well, I do (especially any trivia from 1984 and beyond) and I always thought I could do well on SNY’s New York sports-themed trivia show Beer Money. To my astonishment, the show was taping an episode at my local Buffalo Wild Wings establishment and I was given a chance to test my knowledge on Mets trivia. Just in case you were not...

Niese Dominant as Mets Pillage Pirates

Jon Niese is going to be ok. Following perhaps the worst start of his young career last Friday in Toronto, Niese twirled a gem on Wednesday afternoon in Pittsburgh, pitching the Mets to a 3-1 win and a series victory over the Pirates. Niese hurled 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out five. At one point, he retired nine in a row in the...

The New York Mets were defeated by the San Diego Padres on Thursday night, 11-5: Jeremy Hefner started for the Mets, allowing six runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings of work: Following a 68-minute raid delay, Hefner trotted back out to the mound to start the third inning.  Eveth Cabrera greeted Hefner with a lead off double to left. After a Eric Stults ground out to short, the...

You Can’t Go Up There Hoping

This evening, former Met Rusty Staub was joined by several Mets bloggers on a conference call. On June 2nd, the Mets 50th Anniversary Alumni Bobblehead series will feature Rusty Staub. The following day, Staub will be a judge during Banner Day! We were given a chance to ask Staub one question, so I decided to ask him about the relationship with a hitting coach during a slump, and...

At Least David Wright Is Hitting .415

Ron Darling should know better. When he led off the broadcast by saying "oh well with the Pirates and Padres coming up on the schedule, you might think 'hey the Mets could go 5-2'", he started to sound too much like my late night conversations trying to be presumptuous about what's an "easy win" and what's not. I know Darling finished that thought...

Niese's strong outing helps Mets beat Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- New York Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese found the perfect antidote to get back on track -- the Pittsburgh Pirates' anemic offense. The left-hander pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, and the Mets beat the Pirates 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park. New York took two of three games in the series and has won three of its last four overall. The Pirates lost for the sixth...

Game Preview: Padres @ Mets

The Padres come to town tonight as the Mets try to make it three games in a row. Yesterday the Mets took the series against the Pirates as the pitching staff the Bucs. For the Mets tonight, the main story line is the new starter, Jeremey Hefner as he takes on Eric Stults of San Diego. As you all know, finding a consistent starter since Pelfrey went down has been difficult. Schwinden...
