Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has won the Roberto Clemente award, given annually to a major league player who gives back through community service and also excels on the field. The award was announced Sunday before Game 4 of the World Series. Boston's David Ortiz won last year. Clemente was a Hall of Fame right fielder with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while trying to deliver food and relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He finished his career with exactly 3,000 hits.

Dodgers discussing 3-year deal with Brandon League, because of why not?

Earlier this month, I said the Dodgers should look to re-sign Brandon League. It had been reported the Dodgers were looking to do that and, as Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times reports, the Dodgers are discussing a 3-year deal with League. Who didn't see that coming? Here's what I wrote on Oct. 9: "Knowing Colletti, he'll give League a 3-year deal (if Matt...

Kershaw wins 2012 Roberto Clemente Award

DETROIT, MI - Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw was named the recipient of the 2012 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet at a press conference prior to Game Four of the World Series at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game through positive contributions on and off the...

Brandon League on a three-year deal is horrifying, both because of him and reliever history

I didn’t like the Brandon League trade at the time it was executed, primarily because the effect that a reliever can have in such a short time period is both volatile and minimal. That dislike for the deal grew to mockery when he got off to a horrid start, but after the Dodgers said they fixed his mechanics (and I found that they actually did), he reeled off an undoubtedly impressive...

2012 Los Angeles Dodgers Season Review: Outfield

The Dodgers had one of the best-looking outfields in the National League heading into the 2012 season. Despite not having a left fielder, the combination of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier were tough to beat. After acquiring Carl Crawford, the outfield should be that much better in 2013 and beyond. Dodger outfielders by the numbers Left Field .254/.325/.349 76 R, 34 2B, 4 3B...

Options on Rivera, Coffey declined

The Dodgers have declined to exercise their 2013 options on outfielder Juan Rivera, reliever Todd Coffey and backup catcher Matt Treanor. Rivera is due a $500,000 buyout since the club turned down his $4 million option. He batted .244 with 47 RBI while switching between left field and first base in his first season with Los Angeles. Coffey was 1-0 with a 4.66 ERA. The right-hander...

Dodgers decline options on Rivera, Coffey

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Dodgers have declined to exercise their 2013 options on outfielder Juan Rivera, reliever Todd Coffey and backup catcher Matt Treanor. Rivera is due a 500,000 buyout since the club turned down his 4 million option. He batted .244 with 47 RBIs while switching between left field and first base in his first season with Los Angeles. Carl Crawford Says He Won't Be 'Forgetten Guy' As Dodgers Welcome Him to Team After Surgery

LOS ANGELES -- Carl Crawford slipped his new No. 25 jersey over his head, finally having joined the Los Angeles Dodgers two months after the blockbuster trade from Boston that left him as the forgotten $100 million man. "Feels good," he said, smiling at his introduction Friday. Crawford had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow two days before the Aug...

Free agent preview: Los Angeles Dodgers

The 2012 Dodgers started out like a house of fire....and then hit the wall once Matt Kemp went down with hamstring issues, missing most of May and June. The team eventually ceded their NL West lead to the World Champion Giants, despite a summer spending spree that saw them acquire Hanley Ramirez, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Joe Blanton, and Shane Victorino. ...

Dodgers open to dealing Andre Ethier?

ESPN’s Buster Olney dropped a bomb on Twitter Monday night. Apparently, the Los Angeles Dodgers are willing to move outfielder Andre Ethier after he signed a five year, $85 million deal during the season. There’s plenty of teams looking to add serviceable outfielders (cough Yankees cough), so a deal for Andre Ethier could actually come to fruition as free agency begins. Ethier...

Carl Crawford Says Boston Fans Would Have Thought He Was 'Just Trying to Take Money From Them' if He Didn't Play Injured

Some people will say Carl Crawford never understood the expectations of playing in Boston. Others will say he understood the expectations far too well. Crawford, who was finally introduced as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday after spending much of the time after his August trade from the Red Sox recovering from Tommy John surgery, said his injury-marred...

Clayton Kershaw Attends Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen Concert After Winning Roberto Clemente Award

Clayton Kershaw had all the reason in the world to celebrate this weekend. Major League Baseball recognized the Dodgers' pitcher, honoring him with the Roberto Clemente Award. Kershaw became the youngest player to win the award, which honors an athlete who is the best ambassador for the game on and off the field. He certainly took an uncharacteristic route...
