The Reds got the type of pitcher they sought and the San Diego Padres got enough to give them Mat Latos, though the right-hander said he had thought he wouldn't be traded. The Reds picked up Latos by giving up right-hander Edinson Volquez and three of the team's top prospects, reeling in the front-line starter they were looking for and sending out a plethora of young talent.Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said on a conference call announcing the deal he was eager to pair the 24-year-old Latos with ace Johnny Cueto."Our offseason objective was to try to upgrade our rotation and add a top-of-the-rotation starter ..." Jocketty said. "He's definitely a top-of-the-rotation guy who will slot in well behind Cueto and, in time, will develop into a No. 1 starter."The Padres received plenty of talent they can watch develop in Volquez and some of the Reds' best minor-leaguers. First baseman Yonder Alonso, right-hander Brad Boxberger and catcher Yasmani Grandal are headed to the Padres."Our young starting pitching depth allowed us to make a move like this," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said in a release, adding the team's farm system has many more pitchers coming up in the future. "We've added four credentialed young players who can help us win in the short and long term."Latos said on a conference call he was feeling "a little bit of shock and a little bit of excitement." He went 9-14 with a 3.47 ERA last season, holding batters to a .233 average. The year before, he went 14-10 with a 2.92 ERA."I've been hearing my name in those trade rumors, and the vibe I got from our front office was completely different, but, again, things happen for a reason and I'm extremely excited to join the ballclub," Latos said.Volquez commanded attention in 2008 when he went 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA, but following his elbow surgery the next season, the righty has not been the same, going 13-12 in parts of the next three years. Last year, he was 5-7 with a 5.71 ERA.Alonso has a shot in San Diego to start, Byrnes said, which is something that would not have happened in Cincinnati since the first baseman was blocked by Joey Votto. A shift to left field did not work out too well defensively for Alonso, 24. But his bat should help him if he can stay at first base as he hit .330 with five homers and 15 RBI in 47 games last year for the Reds.Grandal was also blocked in Cincinnati with Ryan Hanigan behind the plate. He played everywhere from Class A to AAA ball last season, hitting .305 with 14 homers and 68 RBI in 105 games combined.Boxberger went 1-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 25 appearances for Class AAA Louisville last year.NOTES, QUOTESBrackman is coming home to pitch for Reds --RHP Andrew Brackman said he had reached a deal with the Reds. Brackman, 26, was the New York Yankees' top pick in 2007 draft and signed a four-year, 4.55 million major league deal, but the Yankees declined his option for 2012. Brackman went 3-6 with 6.00 ERA at Triple-A last year. He is a product of Moeller High in Cincinnati.--2B Brandon Phillips' agents continue to discuss a contract extension with the Reds. "We're still talking," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "We've made some progress."--SS Paul Janish, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, was tendered a contract. He lost his starting job to Zack Cozart. Janish's bat -- he hit .214 with no home runs in 336 at-bats last year -- doesn't make him ideally suited for a bench role.--INF Ryan Theriot is a player the Reds are interested in after he was non-tendered by the St. Louis Cardinals. The Reds are in the market for a utility man who can play shortstop.--C Corky Miller was re-signed to a minor league contract. Miller, 34, did not appear in the big leagues in 2011. Ryan Hanigan is the only catcher in the organization with more than 50 big-league at-bats.BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Players outside the organization added to the roster by the Reds this offseason. Andrew Brackman was the only one until they got Mat Latos from the Padres.QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's a good fit for me. I grew up going to games at Cinergy. My whole family is excited. Both grandmas are happy." -- RHP Andrew Brackman on signing with his hometown team.ROSTER REPORTThe Reds did very little last offseason, but that was not likely to be the case this year -- and after a lot of effort to land a top starting pitcher, they finally snagged Mat Latos from San Diego. ARRIVAL: RHP Mat Latos (trade with Padres).DEPARTURES: RHP Edinson Volquez, 1B Yonder Alonso, RHP Brad Boxberger and C Yasmani Grandal (traded to Padres); LHP Dontrelle Willis (free agent, signed with Phillies), C Ramon Hernandez (free agent, signed with Rockies), LHP Matt Maloney (waiver claim by Twins).BIGGEST NEEDS: Left field and leadoff are concerns, too, but they can be filled internally.FREE AGENTS: SS Edgar Renteria, RHP Francisco Cordero. The Reds will likely allow Renteria to walk. They declined a 12 million option on Cordero.ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RHP Homer Bailey, RHP Edinson Volquez, RHP Nick Masset, RHP Jose Arredondo, LHP Bill Bray, INF Paul Janish.MEDICAL WATCH:--3B Scott Rolen (left shoulder surgery in August 2011) was limited to 65 games in 2011. He is expected to be ready by spring training.--SS Zack Cozart (Tommy John surgery on left elbow in August 2011) is expected to be ready by spring training.
