Last night was tough, but I assure you, it will get better.
Cliff Lee stole our hearts in 2009, leading the Phillies to the World Series on a 4-0 postseason record and a 1.56 ERA. He led the Rangers to the World Series as well last year, but his unsuccessfulness in the World Series continued last night. In 6 innings, Lee allowed 12 hits, 5 earned runs, while walking 2 and striking out 9. With this loss, Lee fell to 0-3 with a 7.13 ERA in his last three postseason starts. Not the way we want to see Cliff start.
Although Cliff gave up 5 earned runs, the Phillies scored 4 of their own, all in the first two innings. They quickly pounced on Chris Carpenter, tacking on 3 runs in the first inning, and another run in the second. Carpenter left after the third, ending his line: 3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. After Carpenter’s early exit, the Phils were held hitless throughout most of the rest of the game. Their first hit coming off of Jimmy Rollins’ bat in the seventh inning....
