Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect Yasiel Puig is in some serious trouble after being arrested in Tennessee early on Sunday. Puig faces charges of reckless driving, speeding and driving without proof of insurance, after police claim he was going 97 mph in a 50-mph zone. The Chattanooga Police Department says Puig claimed he was acting as a designated driver when he was arrested at about 1 a.m. The Cuban prospect’s car was reportedly weaving in and out of its lane and “it took blue lights and multiple sirens” by the police to get his car to stop. Puig is a 22-year-old prospect who defected from Cuba in 2012 and established residency in Mexico, which allowed him to become a free agent. On June 28 last year he signed a seven-year, $42 million deal and was immediately placed on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. He is currently on Los Angeles’ Double-A affiliate in Chattanooga, and is hitting .333 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 13 games so far this season. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti claimed the organization takes these charges seriously and will handle discipline internally. Puig is a highly-paid prospect and the Dodgers better make sure he gets whatever message they send with the discipline he faces. He is going to be a big part of the team’s future and will be expected to contribute soon.
