Talk about taking the bad with the good. The Dodgers completed a sweep of a three-game series against the World Champion Cardinals Sunday night only to get more bad news along two fronts. Rookie Scott Van Slyke (right) was the unexpected hero Sunday night when he hit a pinch-hit, three run home run that turned a 5-3 Dodgers deficit into a 6-5 win. First, second baseman Mark Ellis had to undergo emergency on his foot to fix an injury that, according to team doctors, if left untreated, could have resulted in an amputation. He is expected to be out at least six weeks. In Friday’s night’s win against the Cardinals, Ellis was hurt while attempting to turn a double play against the St. Louis Cardinals.  The runner, Tyler Greene slid into Ellis’ leg with what most are saying was a typical takeout slide.  Although X-rays did not show any broken bones, the ankle continued to swell. On Saturday, Ellis underwent a procedure, known as a fasciotomy, which relieved pressure on the leg’s muscles...

Report: Ellis almost lost a leg

Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis needed emergency surgery after injuring his leg on Saturday night, and a recent report indicates he was dangerously close to losing a leg.

Mark Ellis a huge loss for Dodgers, plus other news and notes

I was definitely in the minority when the Dodgers signed Mark Ellis in November. Perhaps it's because living in Northern California, I get to watch a lot of Oakland Athletics' games, so I saw him play a lot. Perhaps it's because I have no idea what I'm talking about. This is what I wrote the day he signed: "Ellis will likely be the team's starting...

Ellis almost lost leg after injury

The Los Angeles Dodgers' Mark Ellis was so severely injured in a play at second base Friday night that he came within hours of potentially losing his leg, manager Don Mattingly said Sunday. Ellis underwent a fasciotomy on his lower left leg Saturday and team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache told him the muscle might have died if surgery had been performed six or seven hours later...

Dodgers lose Ellis at least six weeks

Mark Ellis has been a big contributor to the Los Angeles Dodgers' hot start, providing stellar defense at second base and getting on base at the top of the order, with a .373 on-base percentage and 27 runs scored in 37 games through Sunday's 6-5 win over St. Louis. But Ellis will be out for at least six weeks after getting placed on the disabled list on Saturday. Ellis...

Dodgers 2B Ellis has emergency surgery on leg

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday following emergency surgery to remove pressure on his left leg, and will remain hospitalized until the middle of next week. He is expected to be out for at least six weeks. "He was sent to the hospital, and testing showed elevated pressure in several compartments...

Van Slyke homers vs. dad's ex-team

Pinch-hitter Scott Van Slyke his first major league homer, a go-ahead three-run shot in the seventh inning against his father's former team, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. Kyle Lohse allowed three runs and 11 hits over 5 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and left with a 5-3 lead. But rookie Elian Herrera started...

Found on eBay: Andy Van Slyke stuff

Last night Los Angeles Dodger Scott Van Slyke, the son of my favorite baseball player ever Andy Van Slyke, hit a 3 run HR in the 7th inning to help the Dodgers defeat the Cardinals. This was Van Slyke’s first career dinger. Naturally when I saw “Van Slyke” that made me think about how awesome that his dad was. I currently own only one piece of Pittsburgh Pirates attire and...

A Legacy’s Son Gets Some Home Cooking

First blast It only took Scott Van Slyke, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, nine plate appearances to hit his first career home run with a blast over the left field wall.  Scott, the son of former Pittsburgh Pirates 3 time All-Star Andy Van Slyke, received the green light on a  3-0 pitch from Marc Rzepczynski. With two outs and two on in the bottom of the seventh inning.  He brought...

Van Slyke's 3-run HR helps Dodgers top Cards

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Pinch-hitter Scott Van Slyke his first major league homer, a go-ahead three-run shot in the seventh inning against his father's former team, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night. GIFcap: Scott Van Slyke gets the green light, wins the game with a homer

Rescuing the Dodgers from what seemed liked sure defeat against the Cardinals, rookie Scott Van Slyke launched a three-run bomb to left-center field on a 3-0 count. Give credit to Don Mattingly for pinch hitting Van Slyke against the lefty over going with the veteran in Adam Kennedy, and also for giving him the green

Despite injuries, Dodgers finding ways to win

LOS ANGELES A solar eclipse took place in Los Angeles Sunday evening, but If you looked at the Dodgers disabled list rather than the team's 25-man roster, you'd come away certain that things had already gotten about as dark as can be. And when second baseman Mark Ellis joined the dreaded "List of Eight"four starters included--the light at the end of the tunnel...

Mark Ellis was hours from losing his leg

On Friday, Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis was taken out on a slide by the St. Louis Cardinals' Tyler Greene while Ellis attempted to turn a double play. The slide looked clean and Ellis was able to walk away from it to the point he was walking into the clubhouse as if everything was normal the next day. But everything was not normal. He complained to the trainer...

Tater Trot Tracker: Trot Times for May 20 by Larry Granillo

A lot of exciting stuff happened across the big leagues yesterday, so let's get right to the trots! Home Run of the Day: Scott Van Slyke, Los Angeles Dodgers - 19.76 seconds [video] As a Brewers fan, I really wanted to put Jonathan Lucroy's second home run here. It was the first game in his career batting clean-up and somehow Lucroy managed two home runs and seven RBIs...
