Maikel Franco waits for a pitch as a newly promoted Reading Fightin Phil. (Photo courtesy of milb.com)
As the Philadelphia Phillies are slumping this season, one thing that has not been slumping is their farm system. The Phillies farm system has been making some noise this season from Jesse Biddle in Reading to Andrew Knapp in Williamsport. But one player who has been getting a lot of attention lately is third baseman Maikel Franco, who is now playing for the Phillies Double-A affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.
Franco has stepped onto the scene slowly as many Phillies fans were wondering about when is Cody Asche going to be with the big league club. Franco has seen his numbers go up tremendously since signing with the Phillies back on January 13, 2010. Now you might be asking yourself, why should we care about Franco since he is only in Reading? That’s a good question as I said his numbers has gotten tremendously better and he finally took off in 2012 with the Lakewood Blue Claws of the South Atlantic League. That season in Lakewood, Franco hit 14 home runs, drove in 84 RBI, while batting .280 in 132 games. He also had that year a .336 on base percentage and .439 slugging percentage.
This season, those numbers from 2012 would go up again. Franco would begin the season in Clearwater with the Threshers and there he finally started to make a name for himself. From that point on Phillies fans would start to take notice of the 21 year old’s power and overall skills.
In 65 games with Clearwater, Franco had hit 16 home runs, drove in 52 RBI and batting .299. Also his on base percentage and slugging percentage would increase to .349 and .576. With those kind of numbers, he deserved a call up to Reading and that’s what happened. Right now, Franco is batting .418 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 13 games so far with the Fightin Phils.
With that being said, I will not say that Maikel Franco is going to be the next Ryan Howard because let’s face it not many of those types of players come around that often. I see Franco having a Domonic Brown type of power in which you can consistently get 20-25 home runs from him. But for me to make that statement is just me going off of Domonic Brown’s season so far. You have to see how Brown plays in the future and beyond.
It is great to see a young power hitter at the hot corner for the Phillies because they definitely need one and Franco solves their problem. Michael Young is currently playing third for the big league club but if the Phillies fall out of contention, Ruben Amaro Jr. might end up trading him, which opens up the possibility of Freddy Galvis, Cody Asche, or Maikel Franco getting playing time.
Out of those three players, Franco is a long shot to be with the big league as he is very young but has pop in his bat. It will be interesting to see how the career of Maikel Franco turns out as he has a lot of potential to be a star in the majors. He has already started that journey to stardom as him and his teammate Jesse Biddle have been selected to play in the Futures Game at Citi Field in New York City.
If you don’t know the Futures Game is where the best players across the minor leagues come together and play in an All-Star game. Hopefully, in this game Franco plays good enough and could open up eyes in the Phillies organization to push them to maybe promote him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. But if that does not work, Franco could definitely be a September call-up once rosters expand so he can get a taste of being a major league player.
Until then, the 21 year old third base prospect is slowly developing into one of the next great power hitters to come up in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown should be an all-star
The future for the Philadelphia Phillies begins now
BEST OF MAXIM
If Amaro doesn’t change his tune, his insistence that this aging core is worth holding onto will be his downfall.
Back in March, I disagreed with the notion that the Phillies roster needed detonation, as was then being advocated by Jonah Keri of Grantland.com. I thought there were too many pieces still in place to have that outlook going into 2013… that this veteran group had...
Despite their disappointing start to the season, the Los
Angeles Dodgers are reportedly interested in upgrading their team this summer. In
an effort to do so, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Dodgers could target
Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley.
It’s not known at this point if the Dodgers have contacted
the Phillies regarding Utley. It’s...
The Phillies have done themselves no favors during the first half of the season. Their mediocre play has left them in 3rd place in the NL East and 9.5 games out of first. Losing 3 out of 4 against the Dodgers this past weekend did not help their case either.
And so the rumor mill begins to turn with names like Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon in the mix...
In this newest episode of Phillies Nation TV, Pat and Corey discuss the Phillies first half, some wild numbers from Cliff Lee and other major leaguers, and Dutch Daulton.
Jon Marks from 97.5 the Fanatic is a special guest to talk about Dutch.
Philadelphia Phillies reliever Mike Adams was already unlikely to pitch this season but now it seems he has finally decided to undergo surgery instead of trying to rehab his labrum & rotator cuff injuries. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel mentioned that Adams would undergo a procedure when talking to MLB Network Radio on Wednesday.
Manuel on Mike Adams: "We'll see...
The Philadelphia Phillies did not have Ryan Howard in the starting lineup last night. His knee has been bothering him, so manager Charlie Manuel decided to give Howard a day off. This isn't the first time Howard has been given rest due to his knee. He missed time last weekend because the knee was bothering him.
According to George Von Benko of MLB.com, Howard played...
After falling behind three runs, Phillies nearly came back to tie it in the sixth and again in the ninth, but fell short with a 6-5 defeat. John Lannan struggled over the five innings he pitched, scattering 11 hits and allowing four runs. Three of the runs came off a Pedro Alvarez home run in the fifth. Domonic Brown had three hits, including a two run home run that nearly...
The Phillies ended the Pirates nine game winning streak on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over the Bucs in the opener of their three game series.
A three run sixth and a strong combined effort from the starting pitching and relief helped the Phils to the win after a rough weekend in Los Angeles.

The Philadelphia Phillies offense was silent but waited for their moment against Pittsburgh Pirates emergency starter Brandon Cumpton Tuesday night. The Phillies picked up three runs in the sixth inning to chase Cumpton from the game and the young bullpen came through to get the game from starter Jonathan Pettibone to Jonathan Papelbon to pick up a 3-1 victory in PNC Park.

Count Jonathan Papelbon among the Yasiel Puig haters.
Puig has taken the majors by storm since breaking into the Dodgers lineup on June 3, prompting many to trumpet his All-Star candidacy. Papelbon, frankly, thinks all this talk is ridiculous .
"To me, it's an absolute joke. It's really kind of stupid if you ask me," the Phillies closer said on MLB Network Radio...
