According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the New York Mets have informed left-hander Johan Santana that the organization prefers he not participate in the World Baseball Classic. As a result, the two-time Cy Young Award winner is unlikely to represent his native Venezuela in next month's tournament.
"I would love to play, but I don't think they want me to," Santana said. "They might make it official. I don't know. ... As of right now, I don't think the chances are very high."
Santana said he very much wanted to represent Venezuela, as he did in the inaugural WBC in 2006. He was especially eager after ending last season on the disabled list, he added.
Yet Santana also understands the Mets have $31 million invested in him for this season, including a buyout of his vesting option for 2014. And with Santana less than two years removed from major shoulder surgery and having ended last season on the disabled list, it clearly is most prudent for the ...

Which Mets Could Be On Trading Block This Season?
The Mets should save themselves the aggravation and DL Frank Francisco when the season starts and have the roster spot filled by somebody else.
That would enable Bobby Parnell to have the closer job unencumbered. Having him train for the role in Spring Training only to have it pulled from him at the last minute would be bad for clubhouse karma.
And, if Parnell doesn’t cut it, then...
The Most Underrated Reliever In Baseball Pitches For The Mets
Grant Brisbee wrote a great article last month that only came to my attention today. While browsing through Baseball Nation I came across a post entitled, Baseball’s Most Underrated Reliever.
Over the last five seasons, 40 relief pitchers have posted an ERA under 2.00 with 50 or more innings pitched in a season. Of those relievers, 25 of them are still active… The average salary...
LaTroy Hawkins an NRI who may last the whole season
While examining the non-roster invites on the Mets’ official website you may notice there are quite a number of players who have a legitimate shot at making the club out of spring training.
Veteran arms such as Scott Atchison and Aaron Laffey have MLB experience and could help in the team’s bullpen.
Despite missing two full seasons after shoulder surgery Pedro Feliciano...
Video: Players Are Excited About The Mets Pitching Staff This Season
Your browser does not support iframes.
Terry Collins, Johan Santana, Jon Niese, and Bobby Parnell talk about why they are very excited about the Mets rotation.
Collins’ notes that for the first time in over three years, Santana goes into this season healthy and with no offseason surgery or rehab. He also tabs Johan as his Opening Day starter.
Niese is very high on the rotation...
1986 Mets versus 2013 Mets: Bench
This is the second in a series of evaluations comparing the 1986 World Series Champions with the projected 2013 team. The first article dealt with the offensive contributions of the 1986 Mets starting eight position players. This article deals with the offensive contributions of the bench (or platoon players). In order to keep this from getting too unwieldy, I’ve limited the ‘86...
Sleeper Scout: Dillon Gee and Jon Niese
Despite having a laughing stock of an offense, the New York Mets could easily produce five quality starting pitchers for fantasy teams this season, even with the loss of Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey. Photo credit: MIKECNY Dillon Gee, a 26-year-old, started 17 games last year and was in the middle of a breakout season when a blood clot was discovered in his shoulder, leading to season...
30 Prospects in 30 Days: Travis d’Arnaud – C – New York Mets
This is my first installment in the 30 for 30 series so a little primer may be in order. I like to analyze a prospect through a few different lenses before reaching a conclusion. I call it the 5 Ps of prospects. Sometime, I can throw a sixth lens into the ring – my eyes – if I have seen the prospect in person.

The Unfinished Tale of Collin McHugh – Part 1
By Elliot Chester
Collin McHugh’s third pitch as a major league baseball player was not a bad one, a four-seam 91-mile-per-hour fastball that tailed away from Charlie Blackmon, a slap-hitting nobody who had just two hits all season entering the late August game. But Blackmon, recently installed as the Colorado Rockies’ starting right fielder due to a rash of injuries, stayed...
Wright Humbled By Fred Wilpons Comparison To Derek Jeter
On Thursday Mets owner Fred Wilpon came out and compared David Wright to the Yankees Derek Jeter, at least in terms of being the face of the franchise. You can read more thoughts on Wilpons comments from Adam Rubin at ESPN.
Here are Fred Wilpons Comments:
“David is a unique player. He’s an All-Star,” Wilpon said Wednesday while touring Mets camp. “I think David is an All...
A closer look at Marlon Byrd
It seems like all day, all we've heard is Byrd could end up the starting right fielder, so it seems only fitting to take a closer look at his career. In discussing Byrd most reference his All Star year in Chicago but I was curious to find out whether he was a one hit wonder. Byrd had been a top prospect in the Phillies organization when he broke into the majors in 2002, appearing...
Mets Catching Prospect Travis D’Arnaud Compared To Johnny Bench?
On Friday, Kevin Kernan of the New York Post wrote of high praise for Travis d’Arnaud coming from some of his former coaches.
D’Arnaud is a former farmhand of the Philadelphia Phillies who originally drafted him. He was the center piece in the deal that sent Roy Halladay from Toronto to the Phillies, and his stature as an elite catching prospect is widely known around baseball...
Backman Is Well Aware Of Collins’ Lame Duck Season
According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, Wally Backman isn’t looking to take Terry Collins’ job as manager of the Mets, but his goal is definitely to manage in the big leagues.
For now, Backman is focused on what he’s being paid for and that is to mange the Triple-A Las Vegas 51′s this season.
As I said before, and you can read below, I thought it was naive for...
Wilpon Said Mets Will Spend, But Doubts Are Raised
Fred Wilpon’s proclamation in Port St. Lucie yesterday the Mets are now out of debt and ready to jump into the free-agent market brought a skeptical response. The feeling wasn’t “oh boy, let’s go get Jacoby Ellsbury next year,’’ but rather “I’ll believe it when it see it.’’ Remember, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and not re-signing R.A. Dickey...
My Thoughts On Fred Wilpon, Sandy Alderson and Spending
Yesterday, I was at the hospital all day getting treated, when I heard and read about Fred Wilpon’s announcement to reporters at St. Lucie. I quickly posted a little bit of what he had to say from my phone with the intention of expanding on it the next day (today).
I came home this morning to an inbox full of emails regarding what Fred had to say, with a few them asking me for...
