Is David Wright on his way out of town or is he walking into a huge contract extension? Here are a few talking points as this Thursday morning rolls around. So, by now, you have heard that the Braves have inked BJ Upton to a five year deal worth approximately $75.25 MM, with the .25 million obviously being the deal breaker for BJ. It got me thinking about contracts for a number of reasons. Upton took a much more reasonable deal than I thought he could have commanded, but his value might have been hampered by the fact that the Braves had to give up their first-rounder to grab him. Even though he does not hit for a high average, he plays pretty good defense and steals a healthy amount of bases. However, the contract works out to about 15 million a year, and for a potential 30/30 guy each year with a contract ending at age 33, this seems extremely team friendly. Does it bother you that the Mets have not been linked to Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke? I am not trying to throw salt on wou...

Will Wright Insist On A Full No-Trade Clause?

David Wright: Will he soon be laughing all the way to the bank? Ever since the 2012 season ended for the Mets, I’ve been very outspoken about the team and in particular the front office. Maybe it was the disgruntled Mets fan in me, but it’s nothing personal. As I’ve said many times before, I think Sandy Alderson and the rest of his staff are all very professional and all-around nice...

Mets sign David Wright to a 8 year deal worth 138 million

Mets 3rd baseman David Wright has become the richest man in Mets franchise history. He has agreed to a new 8 year contract worth 138 million dollars keeping in a Mets uniform through 2020. David Wright will now be playing for the Mets for the rest of his major league baseball career. This was the right move by the Mets management of keeping David Wright for years to come. New...

The Mets' negotiations with David Wright are getting serious

A few hours ago, I posted about the Mets initially lowballing a long-term contract offer to David Wright. Since then, things have gone in a different direction. The Mets have drastically increased their offer, going from six years and $100 million to eight years and $135-140 million. Wright would make the $16 million he's due in 2013, the average value on the new contract...

Do Two Wrongs Make A Wright?

It was three weeks ago when we elected a president. After a long, nasty, ugly, expensive and bitter campaign we survived and made it to Election Day. And boom! Just like that more than 57 million Americans, those who voted for Mitt Romney, were pissed off. No matter who would be sworn in in January, literally half this nation would be upset. It was really a no-win situation. The...

Report: Mets Sweeten Contract Extension Offer For David Wright After Subpar Proposal

Contract extension negotiations between David Wright and the Mets have been bumpy. Early on Tuesday, FOXSports.com reported the Mets offered their cornerstone third baseman a six-year, $100 million extension. It appeared the club was lowballing their six-time All-Star with that offer. With Wright expected to refuse the initial terms, the Mets reportedly upped the ante for the 29...

Braves fill need by adding free-agent Upton

The Braves wasted little time in making a statement in free agency. Atlanta has reportedly agreed to a five-year 75.25 million deal with center fielder B.J. Upton, marking the largest free-agent contract in the franchises history. Upton, 28, had spent his entire major-league career with the Rays. Last season he hit .246 with a career-high 28 home runs, 78 RBIs and 31 stolen bases...

If The Mets Trade R.A. Dickey, Who Becomes The Team’s Ace?

At seasons end Dickey called he and Wright a “package deal.” Now that the Mets have locked up David Wright to an extension, they will probably shift their attention to the 2012 Cy Young award winner, RA Dickey. Could it be the reason why David Wright agreed to sign on the dotted line was because he and Dickey are truly a package deal, and now the Mets are going to lock up Dickey...

Sources: Braves land OF B.J. Upton

The Atlanta Braves landed their principal free-agent target Wednesday, reaching agreement with center fielder B.J. Upton on a five-year contract, according to major-league sources. Upton, 28, will replace Michael Bourn, another free agent, providing the Braves with elite defense in center field and a much-needed right-handed presence. The Philadelphia Phillies, the other finalist...

Report: Mets offer Wright seven-year deal

The New York Mets have offered third baseman David Wright a seven-year deal worth in excess of $100 million, according to a New York Daily News report. A previous FOX Sports report said the Mets had proposed a six-year extension, but that that face of the franchise was seeking an extra year. Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals and Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays signed...

Mets Make Wright $100MM Offer, Third Baseman Expected To Reject It

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Mets offered David Wright a six-year, $100 million extension on Monday, on top of the $16 million owed in 2013. It’s the exact dollars and length of the deal that the Tampa Bay Rays gave to Evan Longoria yesterday. But Rosenthal says that the offer is expected to be rejected by Wright’s reps. Wright is wanting more in both years...

Upton Headed to Atlanta on 5-Year Deal

Upton is on his way to the Braves. (MLB) The Braves scored one of the biggest names on the free agent market, nabbing BJ Upton, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, and others. He’s the first shoe to drop and marks the unofficial start of free agency. Upton, 28, is scheduled to take a physical in Atlanta tomorrow, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Bob Nightengale of USA Today...

Mets Offer Wright 7 Year Deal Between $125-$150 Million?

Updated Post 3:30 PM Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is now reporting that a source has revealed to him that the Mets counteroffer to David Wright is for seven years and between $125M and $150M. If Mets are indeed offering Wright such a deal, Rosenthal adds, it seems unlikely he would reject it unless he wanted to be a free agent at end of season. Wow! If it is $150 million, that would...

Rosenthal: Mets offer Wright 6-year/$100 million extension

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the New York Mets offered third basemen David Wright a six-year extension worth $100 million on Monday.  In Thanksgiving terms, I liken this to a lukewarm plate of turkey with mashed potatoes, no stuffing or cranberry sauce.  I guess it’s a starting point in that it follows suit with what Ryan Zimmerman got from the Nationals and matches...
