A.J. Ellis‘ story may top all the crazy childbirth stories you have heard.

The Dodgers catcher says his wife, Cindy, gave birth to their third child in the front seat of their car as they were rushing to the hospital.

Ellis told the story to Molly McKnight, who wrote about it for ESPN The Magazine.

Audrey Elizabeth Ellis was born on October 12, around 8:00 a.m. She came about two weeks early, and several hours early by Ellis’ count.

Cindy Ellis woke up her husband, who has caught for the Dodgers the past five seasons, around 7:00 a.m. to tell him her water broke. A.J. figured he had some time to get ready before they left to the hospital, and that the 30-mile drive to the hospital where Cindy’s doctor was located would be no problem. He was wrong.

Cindy began her contractions while they were in the car, and, according to what Ellis told Knight, began screaming that they wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time.

“And I’m thinking, this is 2012, not the ‘Oregon Trail.’ Of course we’re gonna make it,” Ellis told Knight. “So I’m calmly telling her we’re making it. I figured she was just panicking because she was in excruciating pain.”

She was right. The baby came so quickly she delivered it in the front seat of the car, with the passenger seat pulled down.

The couple elected not to be told the sex of the baby, so they didn’t know they had a girl until after she was born.

They eventually made it to the hospital — Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn, Wisconsin — where mother and newborn were taking into recovery. Both are in excellent health.

The only problem? Cleaning up the car, which he had borrowed from his wife’s parents.

“The in-laws took it to a car wash to be cleaned,” Ellis said. “The vehicle has since reacquired that new car smell.”

The entire story is quite amazing, and it seems befitting of A.J.’s out-of-nowhere awesome season for the Dodgers. After missing the birth of his first two children because he was playing, Ellis sure picked an interesting way to witness his first one.

We encourage you to read the entire story at ESPN.

When I Bought This Card, Half Of The Players WERE NOT Dodgers. Oh Look, It's My 200th Kemp!

Matt Kemp cards are getting pricey, so when an affordable one is available, I can't jump on it quickly enough. This particular addition brought along a few friends that are new to my collection and otherwise wouldn't be in it if they weren't sharing a card with The Bison. Oh, it also happens to be my 200th Kemp!Shane Victorino is a guy I don't hate, like a lot of...

Brandon League on a three-year deal is horrifying, both because of him and reliever history

I didn’t like the Brandon League trade at the time it was executed, primarily because the effect that a reliever can have in such a short time period is both volatile and minimal. That dislike for the deal grew to mockery when he got off to a horrid start, but after the Dodgers said they fixed his mechanics (and I found that they actually did), he reeled off an undoubtedly impressive...

2012 Los Angeles Dodgers Season Review: Outfield

The Dodgers had one of the best-looking outfields in the National League heading into the 2012 season. Despite not having a left fielder, the combination of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier were tough to beat. After acquiring Carl Crawford, the outfield should be that much better in 2013 and beyond. Dodger outfielders by the numbers Left Field .254/.325/.349 76 R, 34 2B, 4 3B...

Truly Elegant Clayton Kershaw Minor League Patches.

I'm a sucker for a good deal, and when it's centered around the man they call Kid K, well, money will leave my being and cards will head my way. Like the amazing below patch of Clayton Kershaw from 2007 TriStar Elegance (I'm a sucker for minor league cards as well).Sick! A two-color patch with some jersey thrown in for good measure, and a lot of stitching. Just how I...

Dodgers' Billingsley throws without pain

Chad Billingsley pitched to hitters for two pain-free innings Monday, a sign that he may be able to avoid reconstructive elbow surgery this off-season. "It looks like he's going to be ready for the 2013 season," said Dave Stewart, Billingsley's agent. Billingsley sat out the final month of the season because of a partially torn ligament in his right elbow and...

Options on Rivera, Coffey declined

The Dodgers have declined to exercise their 2013 options on outfielder Juan Rivera, reliever Todd Coffey and backup catcher Matt Treanor. Rivera is due a $500,000 buyout since the club turned down his $4 million option. He batted .244 with 47 RBI while switching between left field and first base in his first season with Los Angeles. Coffey was 1-0 with a 4.66 ERA. The right-hander...

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Dodgers have declined to exercise their 2013 options on outfielder Juan Rivera, reliever Todd Coffey and backup catcher Matt Treanor. Free agent preview: Los Angeles Dodgers

The 2012 Dodgers started out like a house of fire....and then hit the wall once Matt Kemp went down with hamstring issues, missing most of May and June. The team eventually ceded their NL West lead to the World Champion Giants, despite a summer spending spree that saw them acquire Hanley Ramirez, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Joe Blanton, and Shane Victorino. ...

MLB Rumors: Will Los Angeles Dodgers Trade Andre Ethier?

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Andre Ethier to a lucrative contract extension worth $85 million over the next five years. Everyone around the league knew that they may have grossly overpaid him and, with the other players that the Dodgers acquired around the 2012 MLB trade deadline keeping them on the hook for large sums of money over many years, there is now the possibility that...

Dodgers open to dealing Andre Ethier?

ESPN’s Buster Olney dropped a bomb on Twitter Monday night. Apparently, the Los Angeles Dodgers are willing to move outfielder Andre Ethier after he signed a five year, $85 million deal during the season. There’s plenty of teams looking to add serviceable outfielders (cough Yankees cough), so a deal for Andre Ethier could actually come to fruition as free agency begins. Ethier...

Dodgers Extend Brandon League

Brandon League, who battled a calf injury in 2011, was able to pitch in more games this past season than at any other point in his career.  He was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers just ahead of the trade deadline this past July, and he certainly boosted their bullpen.  Now, the Dodgers are rewarding him with a new contract. According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times...

Celtics owner wonders if Rondo is uncoachable

First things first, I'm the realest I think the title makes it sound a little worse than it really was. That said, the title is completely accurate. On last night's "Sports Final Overtime" on WBZ, Grousbeck was asked about Rajon Rondo as part of an interview which was meant to preview the upcoming season. While Grousbeck said some positive things -- calling Rondo...

S.F. Giants CEO believes ads on uniforms are coming

San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer indicated in an interview with a local radio station in the Bay Area that he believes advertisements on MLB uniforms are coming soon. One of the reasons Baer believes that this is a likelihood is due to the fact that current commissioner Bud Selig has been a consistent opponent of placing ads on players’ uniforms during his trenue. He’s set...

Rocker on 'Survivor': It was worse than I expected

The CBS show “Survivor” will feature a familiar face to baseball fans this season. Former Atlanta Braves closer John Rocker will be in the competitive reality series, which begins its 29th season on Sept. 24. The pitcher, who made over $5 million in his baseball career, had to survive in a remote area in Nicaragua as part of the show. While we’ll have to watch the show to find...

Jerry Jones questions Morris Claiborne's performance

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne was torched for five receptions, 108 yards and two scores against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Anyone who has watched the Cowboys play during this span know this full well. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones...

Bill Simmons dares ESPN to punish him for ripping Goodell?

ESPN’s Bill Simmons sometimes goes off the rails in very un-ESPN-like fashion. As a result, he’s part of a small group of key faces at the Worldwide Leader who are sometimes penalized by their employer for going too far. It’s debatable whether Simmons went too far with his latest diatribe against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday, but it does appear as though — in...

Should Geno Smith sit and Michael Vick start for Jets?

Photo Credit: Jets/Facebook After the New York Jets suffered their Monday Night loss to the Chicago Bears (27-19), two main weaknesses remain evident. One, the Jets secondary has underachieved tremendously being one of the worst in the league. Two, Geno Smith continues to battle with inconsistency throwing the football. In just three weeks, out of 35 quarterbacks that have played...
