The Cincinnati Reds, by all appearances, appear to have all the makings of a formidable MLB ballclub. Yet, like all other major league teams, questions abound for the Reds as the team prepares to embark upon its 2013 season. Who’s going to produce, how’s the bullpen going to hold up, how is the competition going to set up in the National League Central and so on and so forth.

But all speculation may be for naught now, because according to one Reds fan, a pancake he recently cooked up which appears to feature the team’s “C” logo might be an encouraging omen of good things to come for the ballclub. An oracle that is as revealing as it is tasty.

The Reds fan who claims responsibility for the possible culinary omen is Joel Knueven, and he describes how the simple exercise of whipping up a batch of chocolate chip pancakes last Sunday resulted in an eerie development. Via OMGReds (by way of Eye on Baseball):

While making chocolate chip pancakes with his son the morning of Sunday, March 24, Knueven flipped one over and right in the middle of the flap jack was a wishbone “C”.

“The Lord works in mysterious ways, I’m just glad that my pancake batter ladle was chosen as the conduit through which this covenant was made with Reds faithful” said Knueven.

“This was NOT planned, nor did I use some template to try to create it–it looks so dead on that people have asked me that question.”

Knueven has since listed the treasured breakfast treat-turned-harbinger of a possible World Series title (at least in his eyes) on eBay. The listing:

CINCINNATI REDS MIRACLE PANCAKE!

The Cincinnati Reds wishbone "C" miraculously appeared on this amazing pancake. It is believed to be a divine prophecy that the Cincinnati Reds will be World Champions in 2013.

Here is your chance to own a supernatural memento of what is certain to be a historic Cincinnati Reds season. This carefully preserved chocolate chip pancake has been frozen and placed within an air tight container to insure that it's message of hope can be seen by the world.

Shipment costs may be higher due to the fact that climate controlled transport should be secured to maintain the integrity of this priceless artifact.
All proceeds from auction will be donated to the Reds Community Fund.

The opening asking price? $50. But as you read above, any proceeds will be donated to charity, so that’s nice that he’s not trying to profit off divine, pancake-based intervention. But if you ask me, I usually stick with crepes for all of my batter-based signs of baseball soothsaying. Don’t ask me why, it’s just how I roll.

In brief: Isn’t it about time to start winning?

Last game Ugly, ugly score yesterday. The Reds lost to the Mariners 16-0. Homer Bailey took the brunt of it, allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 9 hits and 2 walks through 3.1 innings. Wilkin De La Rosa gave up the next 6 (5 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks through 1.1 innings. Compared to those two, the run apiece given up by Manny Parra and Kevin Whelan hardly seem worth mentioning. Justin...

Reds roster size down to 34 after two more cuts

We can now count the number of days left until Opening Day by using one hand. However, Cincinnati has yet to finalize their 25-man roster. They took a step closer on Wednesday by trimming the roster size down to 34. Southpaw Wilkin De La Rosa and right-handed pitcher Clay Hensley were given pink slips this morning and were re-assigned to the minor league camp. De La Rosa...

Taiwanese fans use Manny Ramirez photo that isn’t, um… Manny Ramirez

Fans in Taiwan came out in force to see the newest member of the RDA Rhinos, Manny Ramirez, make his debut Wednesday. These two ladies marked the occasion with this special sign in support of the washed up slugger. Mandy Cheng/AFP/Getty Images As CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry points out, and dug up from CBS archives, the photo, if you haven’t noticed, is not Manny Ramirez. It’s Johnny...

Wednesday news and notes

The Reds offered Miguel Olivo $100,000 to report to Louisville as part of the new CBA for players with his experience level coming off of a MLB deal the year before. He has not yet decided whether he will accept it, but given that he is hitting .167 this spring, I doubt there is an offer out there for a big league deal. With that said, he may see that the Reds have two pretty good...

Wednesday's mixed bag of Reds news and notes

We are coming down the home stretch of spring training, folks. It's been a long, cold offseason, but the start of the regular season is a mere handful of days away. The Reds will play host to the Padres at Goodyear Ballpark later this afternoon before welcoming the Royals to town on Thursday. They will wrap up their spring slate with a visit to Chase Field for a date with...

Q&A: Bronson Arroyo, Master Craftsman

Bronson Arroyo has won 115 games in the past nine seasons. He’s also come up big in the postseason. But none of his success has come thanks to overpowering stuff. The Cincinnati Reds’ right-hander is a craftsman. His fastball rarely reaches 90 mph, and his breaking pitches are more varied than they are exceptional. His strengths are deception and guile. Featuring a high leg kick...

Reds return intact looking for deep playoff run

Same starting five in the rotation. Same back end of the bullpen. Same starting lineup, except for one spot. On the surface, not much has changed with the Cincinnati Reds, and that's exactly how they wanted it. The NL Central division champions have brought their team back virtually intact for another run at their elusive goal. Another division title is only an initial goal...

Manny Ramirez Makes Debut With EDA Rhinos in Taiwan, Fans Mistake Him for Johnny Cueto (Video)

Manny Ramirez is officially back on the diamond, folks. Unable to land a job (or even a spring training invite) with a major league club, Ramirez has landed in Taiwan, inking a deal with the EDA Rhinos. However, the local fans may apparently want to acclimate themselves with their new star. According to Busted Coverage, Ramirez’s Wednesday debut was nothing short of a circus, as...

In brief: a taste of winning yet to come

Ryan Ludwick laying off a ball outside.Last game The Reds were winners again yesterday, taking down the Padres 3-7. Mike Leake did the starting for the team and had a good outing: 1 run on 5 hits in 6.0 innings. Ryan Ludwick came through big time with a 3-run homer in the seventh inning to break the 1-1 tie and give the Reds a lead they wouldn’t lose. Joey Votto also his a home...

Reds to roll out even more food options at Great American Ball Park in 2013

Food offerings at stadium venues have come along way in recent years. It used to be rare to find anything besides traditional items such as hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, and coke. Now, concession menus across the country have expanded to accodomate even the most fickle of eaters. The Reds have certainly done their part to stay up with the trend by offering its fans a nice blend of...

Reaction To Chapman Decision

Aroldis Chapman turned in one of the best seasons by a closer in MLB history last season when he saved 38 games (in 43 opportunities) struck out an amazing 122 batters in 71.2 innings, had an ERA of just 1.51 and a WHIP of merely 0.81. Interestingly, the only season by a closer since 2004 that was on par or better than what Chapman accomplished last season … happened...

Reds 11, Cubs 1

Johnny Cueto pitched six shutout innings in a smooth warmup for opening day and Todd Fraizer homered to send the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija also had a good night in his final outing before the season opener. He gave up one run and five hits in five innings, striking out five. Cueto had a hit in the third...

The Knee

Cincinnati entered this spring training without many questions but one of the big ones they had was the health of Joey Votto’s knee. Though comments from him indicate he’s needed a lot of extra work to prepare for their April 1 opener, the way he’s been hitting Cactus League pitching suggests he’s at least close to being back to 100%.

NCB MLB Preview–NL Central

We continue our MLB previews today by moving into the Central divisions, beginning with the NL.  Full disclosure:  I am a diehard Cardinals fan, and therefore also a Cubs hater, but I’m going to do my best to stay as objective as possible here.  Here we go: Cincinnati Reds Notable offseason additions:  Shin-Soo Choo Notable The post NCB MLB Preview–NL Central appeared first...

Jordy Nelson wants $10 million a year from Packers

A few weeks ago I was told that the Green Bay Packers and wide receiver Jordy Nelson were close to agreeing on a contract extension that would keep him in green and gold for a long time. Since then, Nelson’s contract demands have apparently grown a bit and the two sides aren’t as close as they once were. A report on Thursday claims that Nelson is seeking “at least” $10 million...
