With two weeks to go before Opening Day, Kirk Nieuwenhuis should be thinking about where he would live in New York rather than Las Vegas. Nieuwenhuis, who made a strong first impression with the Mets last year, came to camp penciled in as the center fielder and first in line to win the leadoff spot. However, a hitless streak at the start of the exhibition schedule punctuated with a rash of strikeouts followed by a deep bone bruise on his left knee made this a washout spring. It should be fun for a young player competing for a starting job.“Fun?’’ Nieuwenhuis asked. “It should have been fun, but it’s no fun spending time in the trainer’s room. It’s no fun when you can’t get onto the field. This has been a very frustrating time.’’ Nieuwenhuis was injured two weeks ago, and yesterday participated in batting practice and outfield drills. Once he runs the bases, he’ll be cleared to play, but it will be a minor league game. Perhaps early this week Nieuwenhuis will get in a game, but Collin

Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler get the week started on a positive note for Mets fans

New York Mets pitchers Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler both pitched on Monday afternoon and the results were enough to help Mets fans get their week started on a good note.  Harvey, going up against the St. Louis Cardinals, made his fifth start of the Spring and went 5 1/3 innings while allowing two runs and striking out six batters.  Harvey now boasts a 2.95 Grapefruit League ERA...

A few years from now, or perhaps in July, this battery could be a big deal. Matt Harvey and Travis d’Arnaud represent the Mets’ future, and today they provided a glimpse. Harvey, already in the rotation, gave up two runs in 5.1 innings and was backed by two hits and two runs scored by d’Arnaud in a 3-2 victory today over St. Louis. In an 80-pitch effort, of which 54 were strikes...

Mets’ Injury Updates And Today’s Batting Order

The Mets can realistically expect to have three, perhaps four, significant players open the season on the disabled list: David Wright, Johan Santana, Frank Francisco and possibly Daniel Murphy. Murphy remains sore after playing five innings of defense in a minor league game last Friday. Terry Collins said to expect him to play no sooner than Wednesday, and if he’s not playing by...

Mets News: Wright Unsure He’ll Be Ready For Opening Day, Has No Regrets

Updated 3/17 As I feared, David Wright rejoined the Mets this morning and uttered the words I was hoping I wouldn’t have to hear. Regarding whether he will be ready to play by Opening Day, Wright had this to say: “That’s looking to predict the future, and I can’t do that, and I won’t do that, because it’s the first day I’ve been back in camp.” “So I don’t know...

Mets Could Have 60% Of Payroll On DL To Open 2013 Season

With Opening Day less than two weeks away, the names of those who could open the season on the disabled list has more star power than the team we’ll see on the field come April 1 against the Padres. Closer Frank Francisco told the team he is still not feeling right after a 31-pitch side session on Saturday. He is still trying to recover from inflammation following off-season...

Happy St. Patrick’s Day: Remembering A Longtime Irish Met

Every St. Patrick’s Day I think of many of my favorite Irish Mets, and one guy that always comes to mind isn’t even a playewr, it’s in fact longtime New York Mets head groundskeeper, Pete Flynn. Watch this video: Your browser does not support iframes. Flynn comes out of County Leitrim in Ireland, from a town called Ballinamore. He came to this country in 1961 and went to work...

Mets Pitcher LaTroy Hawkins Getting Ready To Skin A Hog

What’s LaTroy Hawkins been up to lately (other than re-tweeting #KUBoobs pics)? Well aside from working his way into a roster spot in the Mets organization, it looks like the big fella has spent some time out in the wild hunting and gutting some hogs! I’m not sure why, but I love the fact that he is out hunting hogs in his Mets clubhouse gear. All of his hunting buddies are rocking...

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- With Johan Santana sidelined, Jonathon Niese is looking more and more like the New York Mets' opening day starter. Niese gave up one run and two hits in five innings Sunday in the Mets' 2-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. With Santana still building up arm strength -- he hasn't pitched in a single spring training game -- Niese appears to be...
