The Los Angeles Dodgers face elimination from the National League Championship Series tonight in St. Louis. Trailing the Cardinals three games to two the Dodgers send their ace and maybe the best starting pitcher in Major Leagues, Clayton Kershaw(17-10, 1.73 ERA), to the mound to extend their season for at least another day.
St. Louis will counter with rookie sensation and favorite of Muppets fans everywhere, Michael Wacha(6-1, 2.40 ERA). Wacha and the Cardinals bullpen out-dueled Kershaw and the Dodgers in game two of the NLCS, 1-0. Kershaw surrendered the only run of game two on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Runs will again be at a premium in game six with these two starting pitchers. Kershaw has an outstanding ERA of 2.88 in the postseason and is the favorite for the National League Cy Young Award. All of this doens’t matter at all to Wacha. He’s 2-0 this postseason with a microscopic ERA of just 0.64.
As can be expected with so much on the line there has been a bit of contention develop between the Cardinals and the Dodgers. Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig flipped his bat half way to Encino in a game earlier in the NLCS.
Dodgers first baseman Adrain Gonzalez aggravated Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright in game three of the NLCS. Gonzalez was talkin’ a bit of trash from third base in the fourth inning. After the game Wainwright said Gonzalez was doing some “Mickey Mouse stuff” when he was at third base trying to induce him into making a mistake on the mound.
In game five Gonzalez made Mouseketeers everywhere giddy. He fanned the flames even further when after one of his two home runs he did the traditional Mickey Mouse pose.
The Cardinals are seeking to avoid choking away a three games to one advantage in the NLCS two years-in-a-row. Last year it was the San Francisco Giants who completed the comeback to win the National League Pennant. This year the Giants hated rival, the Dodgers, seek to do the same.
Injured Dodgers, shortstop Hanley Ramirez and center fielder Andre Either, are both expected to play in game six. You can catch the game on TBS tonight at 8:37pm EDT.
