The San Diego Padres have requested unconditional release waivers for pitcher turned pinch hitter Micah Owings, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
Back in July, Owings hinted at trying to become an everday player to be able to hit more often. “I haven't given up pitching, but I'm following my conviction to pick up a bat,” said Owings. “A lot of attention will be given to the forearm for this change, but the bottomline is that I want to go this direction. The club is behind it, and I'm grateful for that.”
Owings, 30, has a career 32-33 record with a 4.86 ERA, 1.2 HR/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 6.5 SO/9 in 483.0 innings with the Diamondbacks, Reds and Padres. As a hitter, Owings is a lifetime .283/.310/.502 hitter with 9 HR's, 35 RBI's and a 106 OPS+.
