The San Diego Padres retired all-time save leader Trevor Hoffman's No. 51 jersey prior to Sunday's game against the Florida Marlins. Hoffman retired last offseason following an 18-year career that saw him record 601 saves. Hoffman accepted a job as a special assistant in the Padres' front office. Hoffman was selected by the Marlins in the 1992 expansion draft after beginning his career in the Cincinnati Reds' system. He was dealt to San Diego in 1993 as part of a trade that sent outfielder Gary Sheffield to the Marlins. Hoffman wound up with 552 saves with the Padres before signing with Milwaukee prior to the 2009 season.
