There is no way that San Diego Padres general manager Josh
Byrnes exits the offseason with the addition of free agent Jason Marquis being
his only “significant move,” a rival executive told Ken Rosenthal of FOX
Sports.
One rival executive says there is no chance that general
manager Josh Byrnes completes his off-season with the addition of free-agent
right-hander Jason Marquis as his only significant move.
Rosenthal notes that if the Padres are to make another
significant addition this winter, it’s unlikely to come from the free agent
market. San Diego believes their young starting pitchers can post similar
numbers to veterans such as Joe Saunders at a fraction of the price.
While they’re not expected to enter back into the free agent
market, Rosenthal says the Padres could still trade for a pitcher. He lists Detroit
Tigers’ Rick Porcello, Kansas City Royals’ Luke Hochevar or Los Angeles
Dodgers’ Aaron Harang as possible targets for the club.

MLB Hall of Fame Pitches a Shutout
Dave Winfield HOF Plaque – Photo by ewen and donabel
Don’t blame the writers for not voting for a bunch of cheats. Blame Bud Selig for letting it happen.
With a ballot that looked like an All-MLB first team from the mid-90s, the candidates put up a goose egg (75.0% or higher needed for induction). Today, no player was elected in the MLB Hall of Fame. As a Padres fan we are...
White Sox and Red Sox Scouting Javier Vazquez
Ken Rosenthal took time away from defending his position on the Hall of Fame debate to give us some actual news. The Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox are taking a look at Javier Vazquez who is seeming more and more like he will come out of retirement.
Both #WhiteSox and #RedSox also scouted Javier Vazquez tonight.

Phillies Rumors: Philly Still Eyeing Soriano, Wells, Hairston
While the Philadelphia Phillies could be done making moves for the winter, there continue to be reports of their interest in adding a
right-handed-hitting outfielder to their mix of in-house candidates. The
Phillies continue to “look at all options,” including Chicago Cubs’ Alfonso
Soriano, Los Angeles Angels’ Vernon Wells and free agent Scott Hairston, according

Orioles Rumors: Baltimore Pursued Diamondbacks OF Justin Upton
The Baltimore Orioles showed “strong interest” in Arizona
Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton a few weeks back, but talks have since
sputtered as the O’s are returning their focus to starting pitchers, according
to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Add #Orioles to teams that have pursued JUpton. Strong interest a few weeks back, but talks sputtered. Team seemingly more focused...
Daily Friar 1.9.13
As you may have noticed, there was no Daily Friar yesterday. I will of course take full responsibility for that one as I was making the journey back to San Diego from Phoenix and frankly just didn’t have time to do it. So that means today’s post will have articles from yesterday as well as today, so hopefully that will make up for it. The spring training roster is starting to...
A Bad Taste In My Mouth
Contrary to the ideas put out there by Ken Rosenthal, I did have an issue with the way things went down yesterday. In my eyes, anyone who did not have an issue with the shutout yesterday is blissfully ignorant. Rosenthal will not even catch wind of what I say though – I am a non-voter, someone who has an unimportant opinion anyway. But there were a few things that I really wanted...
Different teams, different needs

Orioles Rumors: Baltimore Focused on Starting Pitching
It was reported yesterday that the Baltimore Orioles made a run at Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton in an effort to add the
impact bat they’ve been seeking throughout the offseason. Talks appear to have
fallen through, and the Orioles have once again turned their attention to
starting pitching and their top target Joe Saunders, according to Ken Rosenthal
of FOX...
Sources: Upton rejected deal to Seattle
By Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi
FOXSports.com
Justin Upton is still a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, but not for a lack of effort by the D-Backs in trying to move him.
The Diamondbacks were in agreement on a trade that would have sent Upton to the Seattle Mariners, but the two-time All-Star rejected the proposed deal, major-league sources say.
The Mariners are one of...
