Jonathan Papelbon dropped to a 90% close ratio last night for the Philadelphia Phillies from 93.1%. Will he be able to reach 93% again, which he achieved in 2011?
TAL’S HANDY CAPS
I will publish after every game that is not washed out. I will have many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.

Let's give the Phillies some credit. Despite being out of the playoff hunt, they have become a team that can be fun to watch. With a little over a month to go in the season we know that the Phillies will miss out on October baseball for the first time since 2006, which means that we will get plenty of time to watch some guys get some playing time in hopes of staying on the roster...
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Zack Cozart hit a tiebreaking homer on Jonathan Papelbon's first pitch in the ninth and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Phillies 5-4 Tuesday night to snap a seven-game losing streak against Philadelphia.
Kevin Frandsen hit a tying RBI triple off Jonathan Broxton in the eighth, but the NL Central-leading Reds went up to stay on Cozart's shot off Papelbon...
Last night the Philadelphia Phillies paid homage to the terrible (or awesome depending on how you look at it) trends and style of the 1990′s with Retro Night. Each player had a special graphic when they stepped up to the plate, Waldo was in the house and apparently the walk up music included some classics too.

Phillippe Aumont, one of the prospects received in the 2009 trade of Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, has been called up by the Philadelphia Phillies to replace Jeremy Horst. Horst has been placed on the paternity leave list. As irony would have it, Aumont will be activated for tonight' game, which will be started by Lee.
I am not sure how many times this has happened in the...
The final of the photoshops: Vance Worley in "Home Alone," Michael Martinez as Tupac, Philadelphia's own "Casual Broadcasters," Placido Polanco in "Jurassic Park," Erik Kratz as Ace Ventura, Brian Schneider as Danny Tanner in "Full House," and Scott Franzke & Larry Anderson in "Dumb and Dumber."
Vance Worley fills out the bottom of the rotation, making starts like yesterday’s for the Philadelphia Phillies. Are the young guns in San Francisco getting the job done? The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below.

The Philadelphia Phillies are an enigma wrapped in riddle this season. Their farm system is very similar in that it has a lot of high points and some low points. There are two players in the top ten at their position that will not be included here. Sebastian Valle is a top ten catcher, but falls behind Tommy Joseph (also a top ten catcher) on the rankings for the team...
Many thanks to Danielle for keeping up with all the pictures I was texting her. Here's one large summary post that will get you all the photos in one spot and include any that we missed. The other were with my iPhone; these are taken with a digitial camera. These were taken by me and my wife throughout the game.
There's a lot of these, so I did split this post,...
John Mayberry Jr. hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night.
Todd Frazier drove in all three runs for the NL Central-leading Reds, who were seeking their first series win in Philadelphia since 2006.
The Phillies tied it in the eighth on Jimmy Rollins' sacrifice fly and won...
Cole Hamels against Johnny Cueto sounds like an awfully good pitching match-up. The two candidates for the Cy Young award battled in a pitcher's duel after a shaky and rainy first inning from Cole Hamels. Once Hamels found his groove, the Reds were in trouble.
That first inning for Cole looked like a whole lot of trouble. In the middle of a downpour, Cole gave up two singles...
Domonic Brown as Carlton Banks from the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Ty Wigginton as Forrest Gump, John Mayberry Jr. from "Pulp Fiction", Ryan Howard from an old school Dr. Dre album, and of course, Charlie Manuel as Wilson from "Home Improvement." Again, gold.
The Phanatic on "Baywatch," Jimmy Rollins as Will Smith in the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Juan Pierre as Bill Cosby, and Chase Utley as Dylan from "90210." Doesn't get much better than that.
But this is the truth of the matter, there are thousands of tickets listed online for $2 (Stub Hub). The Phillies losing record is the obvious reason for cheap tickets. Just a few short weeks ago the sellout streak at Citizen Bank Park came to an end 257 games. At first it bothered me and I questioned the value of Phillies fans cause the past few years they were the hot team in town...
Final: Reds 5, Phillies 4.
WP: Jonathan Broxton (3-3, 3.02 ERA) LP: Jonathan Papelbon (3-5, 2.86 ERA) SV: Aroldis Chapman (30)
In a roller-coaster battle of a game, similar to the first game of the series in which the Phillies ultimately prevailed, a ninth-inning home run by Zack Cozart off of Jonathan Papelbon would prove to be the winning run for the Cincinnati Reds.

For one last time, Hunter Pence will associate with and sport the red pinstripes at Citizens Bank Park. Well, sort of.
Tonight, the Phillies plan to giveaway 40,000-plus bobbleheads of former Phillies outfielder Hunter Pence, who was traded last month to the San Francisco Giants for prospects. Phillies director of merchandising...
