Cole Hamels was the final emerging member of the core four for the Philadelphia Phillies, which led to the 2008 championship.  Do you know where and how this era appeared?  Do you know why?  Did Rube Amaro ruin the future of the club? TAL'S HANDY CAPS CAP-SIZE HINDSIGHT Penthouse Occupancy for the 5-1 triumph:  4 The Crystal Champagne Toast is a salute to Freddy Galvis. Freddy Singles To Start The Scoring In The 5th He produced an authoritative RBI single in the 5th and another during the 6th. He had a 3 for 4 evening. He was joined on the top floor by Chooch Ruiz, Joe Blanton and Polly Polanco. Chooch accumulated another multi-knock contest with a big RBI in the 6th, which was the eventual deciding tally. Blanton provided a sterling seven-plus effort on the bump, but he tired in the 8th. The White House red-carpeted Polly, who achieved 2,000 hits with a 2-run bomb to left-center in the 8th. House Music was heard during an up-and-in HBP on Chooch to leadoff the 5th. It just grazed him. Ruiz misled Antonio Bastardo to the Fun House, when they briefly exited their positions with only 2 outs in the 8th. WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every battle that is not washed out. The Phillies finished last summer 42 games over .500, which equaled a year of many positives. I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. SPECIAL REQUEST: If you were directed here by a feed and this review does not mention yesterday’s contest, please go to my author archives or Phillies page for my most recent coverage. (Early morning readers may arrive before the latest post.) Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you. Polly Makes History With A 2-Run Poke In The 8th NITECAP INSIGHT The Centerpiece: The winning combination was formed in 2007, when the fourth main player was on the team for the entire campaign. After Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, Hamels cemented the squad and they went to the playoffs. However, before that there was an extended period of losing baseball. There are, so far, two ways to build that central unit. The Dodgers and the Reds of the ‘70’s went from .500 ball to achieve this dynamic. The others had to endure the basement-dwelling experience first, and no organization has followed or continued their glory days with more of the same. Cinco Ocho Is Money! Again! The Phillies and A’s of the ‘70’s had a long drought prior to their victorious timeframe. The Braves and Yankees of the ‘90’s went through the same process. That’s the design of the amateur draft. It allows the clubs at the bottom to sign the top talent, and over 6 tours they rise in the standings. That’s what you see in Washington with Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. The competitive-balance tax was formulated to stop the purchasing of these young stars after they reach maturity. That means they will be paid by the franchise that produced them, when the 10-11 big-market buyers reach their spending limit. Polly & Chooch Celebrate At The Plate In The 8th The opposite side of MLB success into the 21st century is the barren expanse after the fall from the top. This has a name:  It is parity. If you cannot remember 1 team that had uninterrupted glory years since the 1965 beginning of the draft, you are starring reality in the face. Did Rube trade away our 2015 at the top of the standings? He swapped:  Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, Lou Marson, Jason Knapp, Kyle Drabek, Travis d’Arnaud, Michael Taylor, J.A. Happ, Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar. Half are in the majors: Are any of them household names? Last summer Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singleton and Josh Zied were bartered for a .300-averaging Hunter Pence, who just turned 29. That’s 13 youngsters and we kept Dom Brown, the best one–not to mention Vance Worley. Without the downs there would be no exhilarating ups. Report: Cole Hamels Asking for Seven-Year Extension From Phillies

Cole Hamels is widely considered to be the best pitcher hitting the free agent market this offseason. That is, of course, if he doesn't re-sign with the Phillies first. The Philadelphia starter 's agent is reportedly asking the team for a seven-year deal, according to NBC Philadelphia's Howard Eskin. Hamels, 28, is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA to start the season, and would likely...

Why the Phillies Need to Pay Cole Hamels

Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies. Photo Courtesy of Renee Cendrowski. There was a time when I had a different opinion of Cole Hamels. After his amazing postseason run in 2008, culminating with his World Series MVP and a championship, he seemed to display some diva-esque behaviors. Philly is not the town for that, and consequently, Cole Hamels got the cold shoulder for a...

Hamels returns to pitch Phillies over Padres 3-2

While the Phillies have been looking for answers as they’ve struggled through the first five weeks of the season, Cole Hamels has been one of their most consistent pieces as they look to climb out of the cellar in the NL East. Hamels was stellar on the mound in his return from a five-game suspension, extending his winning streak to five games with seven innings of one-run ball...

Week In Review – Hamels, Turning It Around

Cole Hamels has been a bring spot for the Phillies this season.Cole Hamels finished off the week with his fifth win in a row and leads the Phillies staff with those five wins.  Hamels is the third guy in a rotation behindRoy Halladay and Cliff Lee, but its the lefty thats been confusing hitters all season.Hamels recent domination has people talking; and calling.  Fox Sports’...

2013 Phillies Could See Hamels, Victorino gone

Why worry about next year when the Phillies are mired in last place at 16-19, six games behind Atlanta? Because of the core. You, know: The Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, core. We all knew that age would crack the core of the Phillies, but now money is rearing its ugly head. Cole Hamels is a gamer. Anybody who knows anything about baseball knows that the pitcher...

Hamels steps in as Phillies' stopper

The Philadelphia Phillies' week began with a suspension coming off a series loss to a division rival. It continued with a sweep at the hands of another division foe, which led to manager Charlie Manuel calling for a closed-door team meeting. But if all is well that ends well, the Phillies are feeling a little better about themselves after taking their first series in nearly...

Hamels Returns to Help Phillies Win Series

The 5-game suspension Cole Hamels received for smacking Nationals rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch last week turned out to be sort of a joke. With the off day on Thursday, the Phillies were able to rearrange the rotation, pitching Roy Halladay yesterday and Hamels today. So as it turns out, Hamels did not even miss a start. And the Phillies are sure glad he did not. Hamels was solid...

Cole Hamels is looking for a seven-year deal

Baseball's new villain Cole Hamels is looking for a seven-year contract extension that surpasses C.C. Sabathia's seven-year, $161 million deal with the Yankees in 2008 according to Andrew Kulp The700Level.com. Apparently he'll hold the world hostage if nobody gives that kind of money to him. Back in March, I speculated that Hamels could ask for a C.J. Wilson's type...

The Phils score enough runs in support of a good performance by Cole Hamels as they defeat the Padres, 3-2.

The Phils’ offense knocked in enough runs to support a good start by Cole Hamels as they go on to defeat the Padres, 3-2. The Phils took the lead in the first as Jimmy Rollins hits a lead-off home run, his first home run of the year, and the 38th lead-off home run of his career, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the second as, with a man on second,...

Hamels, Rollins lead Philadelphia to rare series win

PHILADELPHIA -- An extra day off didn't affect Cole Hamels.  The two-time All-Star left-hander threw seven strong innings in his first start back from suspension, Jimmy Rollins ended a long homerless drought and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Sunday.   Hamels (5-1) allowed one run and five hits, striking out five. The 2008 World Series MVP was suspended...

Phillies 3, Padres 2

Cole Hamels was stellar on the mound in his return from a five-game suspension, working seven innings of one-run ball Sunday to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. Hamels (5-1) was suspended by major league baseball after the Phillies left-hander intentionally threw a pitch that hit Washington rookie Bryce Harper a week ago. It was Hamel's fifth victory...

Bryce Harper: The Future Of Baseball?

With runners on first and third and two outs in a game last week between the Nationals and Phillies, Cole Hamels threw to first base to keep the runner in check.  The Nationals’ 19 year old phenom Bryce Harper exploded towards home plate the moment Hamels lifted his leg like a sprinter leaving the blocks at the sound of a gun.  Harper, who was called up on April 28th, was on...

Phillies Take The Weekend Series

On Mother's Day, the Phillies were able to defeat the San Diego Padres, 3-2.  With the win on Sunday, the Phillies were able to take the weekend series. Phillies vs Padres 5/13 QUICK HITS: Cole Hamels went seven strong innings, registering the win.  Cole had 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, and one earned run. Jimmy Rollins hit his first lead-off home run of the year.  J-Roll'...
