PHILADELPHIA -- Lost in the heroics and good fortune from Cliff Lee, the Phillies hard-luck left-hander who went a whole calendar year between wins at Citizens Bank Park before his seven sharp innings on Sunday, was the ongoing quiet yet productive performance of a veteran utility infielder who has taken the reins at third base for the Phillies in August. Lee was only able to drive in the game's first run -- with a one-out double in the fifth inning -- because Kevin Frandsen led off with a single. The 30-year-old Frandsen, who played the season's first four months at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, went 2-for-4 as the Phillies collected their fourth straight win. Although former All-Star third baseman Placido Polanco returned from a month-long stay on the disabled list on August 20, Frandsen has started four straight games at third and in five of the seven games since Polanco was activated. Frandsen has hit safely in 20 of his 24 starts since summoned to the big leagues. He ha...

Cliff Lee’s Contract A Major Obstacle to Phillies Future

When Cliff Lee arrived in Philadelphia on July 29, 2009, it was an exciting time for the Phillies. Fresh off of a World Series win and in the thick of another pennant race, Lee was seen as a piece that could put the Phillies over the top. And he did exactly that. Cliff Lee’s impact was immediate. He gave the team a top of the rotation pitcher that they could pair with their ace...

Phillies' Lee snaps long home drought

Although he said he wasn't aware of it, Sunday was Cliff Lee's last chance to get a win at Citizens Bank Park before coming up on an anniversary he'd rather not hear about. He hadn't won at home since Sept. 5, 2011, a span of 13 straight starts. But on Sunday Lee collected his first win in South Philly in 356 days. He pitched seven sharp innings, holding Washington...

Phillies 4, Nationals 1

Cliff Lee tossed seven sharp innings to earn his first home win in nearly a year and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep against the major league-leading Washington Nationals with a 4-1 victory on Sunday. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and Laynce Nix had a solo shot to back Lee (3-7). The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner hadn't won at Citizens Bank Park since...

Phillies Sweep the Nationals!

It was apparent today that Cliff Lee was determined to win a game at home, something he has not done all year long. And for most of the 1st 5 innings, it was all Lee, all the time. He pitched, he hit and he played defense. The first score of the game came off the bat of Lee who doubled in a run in the 5th inning. The rest of the team got on board fast, with a 2-run homer from Jimmy...

Did the Phillies miss their chance to dump their bad contracts on the Dodgers?

Last week, the Boston Red Sox shocked the galaxy when they dumped over a quarter of a billion dollars in long-term contracts on the Los Angeles Dodgers.  It was a brash, ballsy and unprecedented move by Boston, but it was also one that could quickly allow the disappointing franchise to reboot in a big hurry.  The thing is, it almost wasn't unprecedented because the Phillies...

Putting A Rough Weekend In Perspective

For the Washington Nationals, heading to Philadelphia this past weekend and being swept by the Phillies probably wasn’t something they considered likely. The Nats were facing Kyle Kendrick the first game, and though they had to match up against Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee the next two games, they put out Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann against them. Sometimes, in a 162-game season...

Phillies Can Still Make the Playoffs!

With 34 games to play, the Philadelphia Phillies may find themselves pushing open one of the smallest gaps in an MLB playoff appearance. At 61-67, the Phillies would need to go 30-4 in their remaining games. The way the team has started off their season, you maybe extremly skeptical; but this is not impossible. The Phillies have won 7 of their last 10 games, with a recent sweep against...
