The 2012 Phillies roster has begun to take shape. At this point it is mostly by addition with a few expected subtractions but look for a lot more changes by end of the calendar year. As of Thanksgiving, it remains to be seen whether Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Raul Ibanez will return to play for the Phillies next year. Should any of them choose to exit as free agents this winter, the club has positioned itself to receive compensatory draft selections. Replacements would likely come in the form of free agents but a number of candidates have been signed. The Phillies have offered salary arbitration to Rollins, Madson and Ibanez. These free agents will have until Dec. 7 to accept this offer which would provide them a one-year contract with a salary determined through arbitration.  While Rollins and Madson were expected to receive this offer, the Phillies created some surprise when they also extended an offer to the 39-year-old Ibanez, who made $12 million this past season. Raul Iban...

Sandberg Leads Phillies Minor League Staff

The Phillies announced Monday that manager Ryne Sandberg and his entire coaching staff will return to guide the Triple-A Lehigh Valley club again next year. There had been speculation that Sandberg was being considered for the major league managing vacancies in Boston, St. Louis and Chicago but none of those jobs would pan out for the Hall of Famer. Sandberg’s staff will include...

Name That Phillie - I Love the 80's Edition

This 80's superstar dud had a .303 batting average in 3 seasons with the Phillies Triple-A affiliate in Portland, Oregon. Having near ready minor league talent the entire way across the country doesn't make sense, so it remains a head-scratcher as to why the Phils ever did it. Of course much of the 80's and 90's were one big fubar in Phillies history. Anyway, see...

Food For Thought: The $50 Million Closer

I’ve had some time to think about this mind-blowing, record-setting closer deal that the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon to.  Now don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why they bailed on Madson’s alleged 4-yr, $44 million deal in favor of this 4-yr, $50 million with a vesting 5th year option for Papelbon.  Just look at the track records.  Papelbon has been closing...

Phils Offer Ibanez Arbitration - What If He Accepts?

The Phillies offered some veteran free agents salary arbitration this week including reliever Ryan Madson and shortstop Jimmy Rollins. No surprises there. But the third player offered a potential one-year deal should he accept raised some eyebrows with Phillies fans. Raul Ibanez?!?!? That’s right, the 39-year-old outfielder who has battled injuries and inconsistency in...

East Notes: Valentine, Red Sox, Nationals, Phillies

Here's a look at a few items out of the AL and NL East.. It would be interesting to see if Bobby Valentine's style would be any different after not managing in the Major Leagues since 2002, writes Ian Browne of MLB.com.   The 61-year-old Valentine is a finalist for the Red Sox's managerial opening along with Gene Lamont. The new collective bargaining agreement...

Phillies offer Rollins, Madson, Ibanez arbitration

The Philadelphia Phillies have offered arbitration to free agents Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson and Raul Ibanez. The deadline for the trio to accept is Nov. 30. Rollins, the 2007 NL MVP, batted .268 with 16 homers and 63 RBIs last season. Ibanez belted 20 homers with 84 RBIs in the final year of his three-year deal. Madson might not be in the Phillies' plans after they signed...

Ranking the Best MLB Free Agents

The MLB free agent season is officially open for business and every team is looking to improve. The Philadelphia Phillies have made the biggest splash so far by signing Jonathan Papelbon, but they still have multiple questions surrounding Ryan Madson and Jimmy Rollins. The big market teams are going to find that after the top 15 or so free agents- it isn't very deep. Which...

How Compensation Picks Stifle Free Agent Salaries

The Major League Baseball Players Association and owners of Major League teams have just completed a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, as the previous agreement expired this December. One of the most underrated differences being discussed among the many changes is how the two sides resolved “compensation” for teams that lose free agents. The previous rule in recent years stated...
