The Phillies turned a 3-3 tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers over to closer Jonathan Papelbon on Monday. Six pitches later, they were behind 4-3 ... and would stay there for their third consecutive loss.

Papelbon took some blame but saved most of it for plate umpire D.J. Reyburn. First, Papelbon approached Reyburn on the field. After the game, he ripped the ump while talking to the media.

"I said, 'You know you messed that call up,' " Papelbon said. "I guess he was motioning for Charlie (Manuel). I said, 'I just want to ask you a question.' The other umpire came over and said, 'What are you doing over there?' I said, 'I'm going to ask him a question.' He wouldn't let me even ask him a question."

Papelbon's question was simple: "I wanted to know if he could throw me out for what I was thinking. ... I thought he was terrible. All day. Not just that pitch. All day. And I wanted to know if he could throw me out for what I was thinking. And if he could, I thought he (was bad). Just that simple."

On a night when the Phillies would rally from a 3-0 hole against Clayton Kershaw, the reigning NL Cy Young Award holder, they could not generate enough offense.

"We usually are a hit away from winning the game," Manuel said. "We've been in mostly all of our games. But we have a hard time. We need one hit at times -- a sac fly or anything to score a run. We're not getting it yet. I don't know what to tell you. That's what I see. We come out every day and have a chance to win it. We would definitely be able to do that."
