In a move that the Philadelphia Phillies will regret, the team released right handed pitcher Chad Durbin and recalled Joe Savery from Triple-A. The 35 year old Durbin struggled mightily early this season after signing a $1.1 million contract with a team option for 2014. In 16 games and 16 innings he gave up 25 hits, 4 homeruns, and 17 runs(16 earned) for a 9.00 ERA.
While on the surface his release seems to make sense, this will prove to be a mistake for the Phillies for two reasons. First, they have no one else. The 27 year old Savery was their best option at this time and he has proven time and again that he cannot contribute at the big league level. While his career 4.71 ERA was better than Durbin’s, he is flat out not a major league pitcher.
Durbin has always struggled in the early part of the season. Last year he recorded a 9.00 ERA in March and April and finished the season with a 3.10 mark. He had an 8.38 ERA in the same period in 2011.
