Darin Ruf The Phillies have some decisions to make for tonight's deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. Before midnight tonight, any player signed at 18 or younger with five years of minor league time, or signed at 19 with four or more, must be on the 40 man roster, or they will exposed to the draft. Being that they have 34 players on the 40 man now, they cannot protect more than six more. Remember though, if they push the roster to 40, how do they add guys they sign on the free agency market. So with that in mind, and figuring that no one gets released today (which is unlikely), here's my pecking order for protecting players: Jon Pettibone Ethan Martin Trevor May Zach Collier Julio Rodriguez Leandro Castro Jiwan James Colby Shreve Now that might seem like it's more than six, and it is. I figured I'd rank the whole bubble group, and that way you'd know how disappointed I am when Ruben doesn't listen to my advice (ha). Ph...

The Phillies announced today that outfielder Zach Collier and right-handed pitchers Ethan Martin, Trevor May, and Jonathan Pettibone have been added to the 40-man roster. Collier, 22, was the Phillies’ supplemental first round pick, 34th overall, in 2008. The 6’2 lefty showed improved plate discipline in 2012, hitting .269/.333/.399 in his first year at High-A Clearwater...

Player Reviews: Justin De Fratus & Phillippe Aumont

The Phillies bullpen was a major point of contention this season as it rated as one of the very worst in the sport. However, ‘bullpen’ is not a static term, as relievers come and go. The relief corps at the end of a season could look vastly different than it did during the first couple of months. The Phillies fit this description and, for that reason, it isn’t entirely fair...

Phillies affiliate tweaks name, adds ostrich

The Philadelphia Phillies' double-A affiliate is tweaking its name and adding an...ostrich? The Reading Phillies changed their name Saturday to the Fightin Phils, a nod to the big club's longtime nickname. And the farm team also says a pugnacious ostrich, complete with balled fists, is its new mascot. The club says the name change - in the city affectionately known as Baseballtown...

Analyzing The Phillies: Tyler Cloyd

Categories: BREAKING NEWS News PhilliesTags: PhilliesTyler Cloyd2012 Expectations Tyler Cloyd wasn’t on anyone’s radar before the 2012 season began. Cloyd was with the organization, but he was an unproven commodity buried in the minor league system. 2012 Performance Although few people had heard of Cloyd before the season began, many started to take notice of him while he...

Could We Have a Chase at Third for the Phillies After All?

Photo courtesy of MLB Network We're over a month removed from Phillies baseball, and frankly, I'm bored. Sure, there's football (other than the Iggles) and a time of gross over-eating coming up, but I want Phillies news. I crave it. I fully expected Ruben Amaro to have made some crazy trade by now that would make me hate-love him even more. Instead, I'm forced to...

Who Wasn’t Protected on the 40-Man Roster?

2012 Eastern League All-Star Castro was a notable omission from the Phils' 40-man roster this year. Photo by: Ian Riccaboni Yesterday, the Phillies added outfielder Zach Collier and right-handed pitchers Ethan Martin, Trevor May, and Jonathan Pettibone to their 40-man roster, protecting them from other teams selecting them in the Rule 5 Draft. The Phillies now have 38 players...

MLB Opinion: Chone Figgins Not an Option for Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are open to almost any option that would fill the gaping hole that they have at third base. That almost should not include the recently designated for assignment Chone Figgins. In the old days the Phillies would go after a guy like Figgins and then do a public relations job on their fans as to why they thought he would return to the player he was four years...

Should The Phillies Take A Chance On Chone Figgins?

Figgins seemed to lose himself while playing in Seattle. Could relocating to Philadelphia get his career back on track? Photo: AP With Chone Figgins being designated for assignment by the Mariners yesterday, all signs point to the once productive player hitting the free agent market. Ian Riccaboni and I sat down to discuss whether Figgins might be an option worth exploring for the...

Hot Stove: Phillies Considered Favorites for Upton

While Upton is the center of the Braves attention, he may be in the center of the Phillies' field next year. Photo: AP Slow news day today as we still wait for the dominoes to fall in the center field market, however, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reported today that while B.J. Upton is the Braves top target, the Phillies are considered to be the favorite for the right handed center...

Grand Pappy Moyer is 50!!!

Jamie "Grand Pappy" Moyer hit the half century mark on Sundy, turning 50 years old. The crafty lefty pitched 25 seasons, 5 of which were with the Phillies. He also played for the Cubs, Rangers, Cardinals, Orioles, Red Sox, Mariners, and Rockies. Assuming he retires, he ends his career with 269 wins with a 4.25 ERA over 4074 innings. MLB Rumors: Phillies Targeting Rangers RHP Koji Uehara

The Philadelphia Phillies are searching for a late-inning reliever to setup closer Jonathan Papelbon, and they’ve contacted the Texas Rangers regarding right-hander Koji Uehara, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Phillies, in their search for a setup man, are asking around about Rangers righty Koji Uehara, whose $4 million salary in 2013 might be more than...
