Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco heads to the 15-day DL with what is being referred to as lower back inflammation, according to Phils beat writer Todd Zolecki. A corresponding roster move will be announced before tomorrow’s game and could be any number of players ranging from Pete Orr or Kevin Frandsen to add infield depth or BJ Rosenberg or Tyler Cloyd to add pitching depth. The corresponding move will depend on if the Phils complete any trades before tomorrow. Orr and Frandsen are by far the most likely but either would need to be added to the 40-man roster.
Polanco has hit just .255/.300/.328 this year but his defense will be missed. Polanco’s replacement Ty Wigginton has started the last three games at third but has committed three errors in the last three games. Orr is hitting .260/.300/.331 in 183 PA at Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he has played left field and third while Frandsen was an International League All-Star and is hitting .302/.337/.396 and is proficient a...
BEST OF MAXIM
The Phillies have played some solid baseball lately, which has muddied their trade waters as the deadline approaches. They haven’t identified themselves as buyers or sellers just yet, and have the unenviable task of managing for the future without completely throwing in the towel this year. This hasn’t stopped Ruben Amaro from shopping various players, but in most cases this...
Six years, $144 million. That’s $24 million per year for Cole Hamels, the Phillies’ third $20-plus million pitcher and their fourth player making an eight-figure salary.
Conventional wisdom is that this move cripples the Phillies financially. They’re right up against the luxury tax this season and, with Hamels’ contract, have just under $140 million committed to nine players...
The Phillies look to sweep the Brewers after back to back comeback victories. The hero of the latest Phils comeback, Carlos Ruiz with his base clearing double. Hunter Pence followed Ruiz with a bloop single to right and Ruiz scored what was the seventh and winning run. Papelbon threw a ten pitch ninth inning to record the save.
Looking alive! The Phillies who have won...
The unexpected element is a plus for Jimmy Rollins and the Philadelphia Phillies. Have you noticed the recent transactions in the NL East?

Despite the Phillies not having a game until Friday as they will head down to Atlanta to play the Braves, they will still be at Citizens Bank Park today. No, not for batting practice or a workout- they will be there for a much more important cause- The 28th annual Phillies Phestival.
Since 1984, the Phestival has raised more than $12.7 million for The ALS Association's...
In a game the Phillies had to win, Cole Hamels and the Phillies offense faltered in a 6-1 Braves win.
In five innings, Hamels gave up five runs, three earned, struck out seven but walked six in five innings.
The defense was shaky, as with two outs in the second, as Mike Fontenot let a ground ball tie him up and the Braves went ahead 2-1.
With two out in the bottom of the 5th, Brian...
9 games out of the playoffs with 3 games to play before the trade deadline. A sweep this weekend pulls the Phillies within 6 and in legitimate playoff contention. 2-1 puts them at 8 out, 1-2 at 10 out, and getting swept puts them 11 games out at the trade deadline and firmly in sell mode.
Cherish this weekend – it may be the last time you see the Phillies together as you know them...
Final: Phillies 1, Braves 6.
WP: Ben Sheets (3-0, 0.50 ERA)
LP: Cole Hamels (11-5, 3.31 ERA)
Cole Hamels's first start since signing his 6-year extension did not go quite as one would expect. He allowed five runs to cross the plate over just five innings pitched, while walking a career-high six batters.
The Phillies could not pull off a late-innings heroic comeback for their...

Another day, another unbelievable comeback. The Phillies will go for the sweep this afternoon.
Vance Worley’s last start can be summed up by one bad inning. Worley...
Despite all the speculation that Cole Hamels would bolt for free agency, or that the Philadelphia Phillies would not be able to afford him, the two sides agreed to a six-year contract extension for $144 million, according to what major-league sources have reported to Ken Rosenthal.
The Phillies are expected to make the official announcement later today.
Rosenthal adds that the...
The latest rumor around Shane Victorino comes from Cincinnati, where one Reds insider claims the club turned down a deal that would send Logan Ondrusek to Philadelphia straight up for Victorino. Ondrusek appears a decent long-term bullpen piece, but for a team in the Reds’ position — fighting for the playoffs and with a mediocre 102 wRC+ out of its left fielders — Ondrusek...
Pettibone will head to Triple-A after dominating the Eastern League. Is this a sign of further Phils moves? Photo by: Jay Floyd
Jonathan Pettibone, a former 3rd round pick out of Esperanza HS in Anaheim, CA, will reportedly join the IronPigs after a 7 IP, 3 hit, 6 K performance. The news was first reported by Reading Phillies beat writer Anthony Burkhart who covers the team for...
Signed with minimal expectations, Ben Sheets is providing the Atlanta Braves with a surprising lift in their pursuit of a playoff berth.
Expectations are much greater for Cole Hamels, who the Philadelphia Phillies are banking on to get them in playoff contention for the next half-dozen years.
Pitching for the first time since signing a massive contract, Hamels looks to lead the...
