The White Sox were a black hole for two players last season. One of those players was Alex Rios. You know who the other was. Rios finished 13th among all players in 2010, and even though some regression was expected he would certainly still be a good-very good option among fantasy outfielders. After the putrid stink that was the rotting carcass of Rios’ 2011 season we need a new word to describe that kind of regression. In just 7.6 percent fewer plate appearances Rios scored 28.1 percent fewer runs, hit 38.1 percent fewer homers, tallied an astounding 50 percent fewer RBI and stole a whopping 67.6 fewer bases. By any measure imaginable, Rios sucked.

Best case scenario: Andrew McCutchen (PIT)
Similar players: Chris Young (ARI), Jayson Werth (WAS), Adam Jones (BAL) but faster
Worst case scenario: The 2011 version of Alex Rios

Strengths

Balance. Rios won’t wow in any one category, though he does have 30-steal potential, so his true value comes from his ability to contribute everywhere — aside from the abyss that was his 2011 season, of course.

Weaknesses

Can he take the heat? Well, he did bounce back from an awful debut with the White Sox at the end of 2009 to put up his best year as a pro the next season, but I question whether or not he can rebound from this. If this video tells us anything, it looks like he doesn’t take too kindly to some constructive criticism. (Note: Rios may be a bum, but let the man get into his expensive car with his pretty girl. C’mon.)

ADP Report (213th overall)

I’ve owned Rios through the good (2010) and the bad (2011) and I’ll probably own him in the great unknown (2012). Seriously, though, why wouldn’t you take a chance on him this late? He ranked 13th just two years ago. Thirteenth! Draft him. At least so his feelings aren’t hurt.
