The New York Mets (17-13) defeated the Philadelphia Philles (14-17) tonight to earn their 10th comeback victory of the season and tie their high-water mark on the season at four games over .500.

Miguel Batista (ND, 5.89 ERA)  immediately worked himself into trouble in his first inning of work, allowing a two-run blast to Hunter Pence in a game which seemed doomed from the start. After allowing two more runs in the second inning, Batista managed to bounce back and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the Mets in the game. Manny Acosta(W) helped to bail out Batista in the effort, leaving two men on base in a nice clean-up effort. Ramon Ramirez and Tim Byrdak built the bridge to Jon Rauch, who recorded his first save of the season.

The Mets offense came sparingly at first and it seemed as if the club just couldn't put together the big hit they needed to get back in the game. Down 4-1, the Mets had left nine men on base before Kirk Nieuwenhuis delivered a RBI base-hit to bring the Mets close. The Mets proceeded to have back-to-back RBI hits from David Wright and Lucas Duda to take the lead. The Phillies defense contributed to their collapse tonight, with a potential rundown turning into a thrown away ball that allowed Nieuwenhuis to score the tying run with two outs.

Heading into the 9th inning, the Mets were seeking an insurance run to help secure their victory. Leading 5-4, Mike Baxter lead off the inning with a walk before Andres Torres lined a single that gave the club runners on the corners with no outs. After a Kirk Nieuwenhuis sacrifice fly, Lucas Duda drove in his second run of the night with another 2-out RBI base knock.

The New York Mets will seek their fourth consecutive win tomorrow night in Philadelphia and look for their first series sweep in Philadelphia in six years. The Mets will send Dillon Gee to the mound to oppose the dominating Cliff Lee in what should promise to be yet another highly competitive contest.

Boiling Points:

  • Ike Davis still can't seem to find it offensively, going 0-4 and keeping his average at an anemic .167. While Buffalo doesn't seem to be an option, it's looking more and more like Davis needs to snap out of this soon before a platoon or other options are seriously considered
  • The Mets have taken four of five from the Phillies in their home ballpark and improved to seven games over .500 against the National League East.
  • Daniel Murphy's defense kept the game close tonight and will make several highlight reels tomorrow. He was also able to contribute a RBI-single to get the Mets on the board in the 4th.
  • Mike Nickeas' defense in the 8th inning almost cost the Mets an important run, but Ramon Ramirez was able to regain his control to strike out Pete Orr before Tim Byrdak cleaned up the mess.
  • After delivering the game-winning blast last night, Jordany Valdespin started and went 0-3 with a walk and a run scored. He appeared to be over aggressive early but showed encouraging signs at the plate.
