Larry Bigbie was born in Hobart, Indiana which is actually pronounced Hobert believe it or not.  Bigbie, a big 6-4 outfielder, was drafted 21st overall in the 1999 MLB Draft. He somehow only spent 2 years in the minors before being called up and I have no idea why (Wait yes I do, the Orioles aren’t good/Steroids). After showing no power and hitting under .300 in the minors, he was called up in June 2001.

At age 23, in 47 games he hit 2 dingers, drove in 11, and batted .229 with a .318 OBS. The next season was not good for Bigbie, so he was sent down to prove himself worthy of  the show, and luckily for fame of Hobart, he tore up AAA.  In 2003 Bigbie found his grove, in 287 AB’s, Bigbie drastically improved his BA to .303 his OBP to .355 (both career highs), and hit 9 homeruns. The future looked bright for young Bigbie.

He’d follow that year with another solid season in 2004. Bigbie hit a career high 15 bombs, drove in 68 dudes, and hit a consistent .280. After two productive seasons followed by an “okay” season, Bigbie was traded in 2005 to the Rockies for MLB Network’s Eric Byrnes. Larry’s stats were supposed to transfer over to Coors, but they didn’t. He only played in 23 games for the Rockies until he was traded with Aaron Miles to the Cardinals for Ray King. L-Big only  batted .240 in STL, and at the end of the year became a free agent. He signed with the Dodgers, but never made it to the show. So he then signed with the Braves, and same story there.

In 2007 Larry Bigbie was found on the Mitchell Report for using HGH and other performing enhancement drugs. Of course he was introduced to these roids by David Segui, that’s like smoking weed with Wiz Khalifa. I find it pretty ironic that he took HGH considering he really didn’t have too much power, maybe he was using it wrong?

Bigbie still played baseball but not in the majors; he went to Japan and played for Yokohama Bay Stars in 2008. Then in 2010, Bigbie made a comeback in the Golden Baseball League for the Edmonton Capitals, and he completely killed it as a DH.

What a great feel-good story, expect the 30/30 on Larry Bigbie to be filmed any time now.

The Dodgers should enter the Jorge Soler sweepstakes

While some thought Frank McCourt's final present to Dodger fans could have been to sign Prince Fielder to a mega deal (and the Dodgers were close), there's something a little more practical that could be done; something that would hopefully spur the next Dodger owner to invest in: international scouting.Who am I referring to? None other than Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler...

In the eighth part of my Dodger Blogger Profile series, I catch up with Jon Weisman of Dodger Thoughts. I posted a piece on Feb. 3 I wrote about him a couple years ago.Weisman was the first Dodger blog (or any blog, for that matter) I ever started reading and it's been a treat. He's really the most rational Dodger blogger out there -- he doesn't get too high or too low...

Offseason training in Arizona helps Kemp, others

Matt Kemp was runner-up for NL MVP and signed one of the richest contracts in baseball history a year after he posted a career-worst batting average and was called out by his general manager.

The Bums will always lose!

"My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose!" - The Big Lebowski I know it's still the offseason, but there is always room to make time to bag on the Dodgers. Even Jeffrey Lebowski thinks they will lose this year! For the second year in a row they pi ck up our sloppy seconds (2010 - Jon Garland, 2011 - Aaron Harang). Great...
