Phillies' right handed pitcher Joe Blanton is set to be a free agent at the end of the season. But he may not be in the Phillies plans for the 2012 season which is just weeks away. Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com said that the Red Sox and Orioles sent scouts to check on Blanton yesterday, when he made his third start of the spring. Both teams are looking to add a veteran arm says Salisbury, and the 31-year old right hander could be a possibility. If the Phillies decide to trade him, they could save some of the $8.5 million owed to him and use that money to fill other holes on the team. Salisbury adds that one of the holes they would like to fill is another infielder. If they decide to trade Blanton, either now or around the trade deadline in July, they would probably fill Blanton's spot in the rotation with Kyle Kendrick, who according to teams officials (via Salisbury) is ready for the task. Blanton missed most of the 2011 season due to an elbow surgery, but he appears to be healthy now. In 2011 he was 1-2 with a 5.01 ERA in 41.1 innings. He has a career 1.0 HR/9, 2.5 BB/9 and 5.9 SO/9. Spring Training Gameday: Split Squad Madness!

There are TWO games today. Most of the starters are staying home to play the Braves featuring a start by Joe Blanton and an appearance by Dontrelle Willis. David Hale speculates that this could be Willis’ last appearance in red pinstripes if the outing does not go well. Willis has been plagued by arm fatigue and soreness and part of his contract becomes guaranteed on Saturday....

Phillies 2B Utley hopes to play next week

Chase Utley is so private about his injuries that players on other teams ask reporters for updates on the five-time All-Star. Good luck with that. Utley still hasn't played in a game for the Philadelphia Phillies this spring because of a chronic knee condition that forced him to miss the first 46 games last year. He's not participating in team fielding drills or taking...

2012 burning question: Philadelphia Phillies

From my season preview of the Phillies earlier today... Burning QuestionIs the Phillies offense going to be as disappointing as it was last season, or will they rebound and be above average again? To call the Phillies offense last year anything but a disappointment would be an injustice. The team had a .718 OPS, down from .745 the year before and .781 in 2009. That's a pretty...

Yesterday, the Philllies released Dontrelle Willis who they had signed to a $1mm deal back in December. Today, Troy Renck of the Denver Post notes that the Rockies will internally discuss signing Willis. “It’s tough at this point in camp, but we...

Jonathan Papelbon May Think Phillies Fans Are Better Than Red Sox Fans, But Santa Disagrees

Jonathan Papelbon thinks Phillies fans know more about baseball than Red Sox fans, but he will soon discover that Phillies fans don't always cheer everyone in red. Santa Claus knows a thing or two about getting booed in the City of Brotherly Love. Once Papelbon blows a few saves, he'll discover that Santa isn't the only big jolly guy that Philadelphia fans are willing to torment.
